White houses cling to the fjord-like bay of Cala Figuera, the fresh green of the fig trees shines, creating a picturesque backdrop for the harbor. You are guests in what is arguably the most beautiful fishing village in Mallorca. Here, you can unwind and truly enjoy your holiday.
The small fishing boats are docked in the idyllic harbor of Cala Figuera, and when the fishermen are not bringing in their catch, you can watch them mending their nets or repairing their boats. Despite the tourism boom of the 1970s and 1980s, it seems as if time has stood still here. The village has managed to maintain its special charm as a picturesque harbor town and is even regarded as the prettiest in Mallorca today. We'll show you how to make your holiday in Cala Figuera unforgettable and what you should not miss.
Discover Cala Figuera - Mallorca's Fig Bay
The Beauty of Cala Figuera
About 60 kilometers from the capital Palma, lies the tranquil fishing village of Cala Figuera. Perhaps you have even seen photos of this picturesque harbor, as many Mallorcan films use this charming spot as a backdrop. Although the vacation spot also benefits from tourism, it has never fully depended on it, and therefore it does not exude the hustle and bustle found in many other holiday resorts. Many residents continue to make a living from fishing, and Cala Figuera remains the beautiful place beloved by so many vacationers. Spend your day in one of the many coves, swim in the crystal clear sea, or go for a stroll while enjoying the wonderful views.
The bay Y-shaped, extends deep inland. The dark green shutters and gates of the boathouses provide a splendid contrast to the fresh green of the magnificent fig trees and the bright blue sea. These trees that grow around the lovely bay have given it its name, for Cala Figuera translates to Fig Bay.
A Place Where Time Flows Differently
As you stroll through the village, you'll notice that it is still very quiet during the day - perfect for wandering through the picturesque streets and browsing in various shops. A small artist shop is particularly popular, where the owner sells his own works. Here, you will also find lovely souvenirs to bring home from your Mallorca holiday to display in your living room and always remember the unique atmosphere.
The bright houses with typical Mallorcan architecture, stone walls, palm trees, and pretty colorful flowers on the terraces create such a romantic atmosphere that we feel warmhearted every time we come here. A look at the town's white church is also worthwhile. Just around the corner, you will find a top-notch French restaurant: La Petite Iglesia. Enjoy fresh fish in all variations while seated in front of a quaint little chapel housing the restaurant. But don't forget to indulge in their delicious crème brûlée and a good coffee afterward.
The Idyllic Harbor of Cala Figuera
The harbor of this bay, reminiscent of Norwegian fjords, has a very special charm. Fishing boats bob gently in the water, surrounded by an atmosphere of unique idyl. Believe us, this view will captivate you immediately.
Just take a stroll along the shore and soak in the atmosphere. In the afternoon, settle into one of the nearby harbor pubs and watch as the fishing boats come back into harbor. There are also many great restaurants here offering fresh seafood and many other delicacies. Choose a seat with a harbor view, enjoy delicious food with a glass of wine, and watch the sun set behind the bay - this is what a holiday feels like.
Vacation Guru Tip: The Restaurant Pizzeria Es Port is located along the harbor. Here, you can indulge in delightful tapas, fresh fish, or delicious seafood salads while enjoying a picturesque view of the turquoise sea.
Swimming Fun in the Dream Bay
In Cala Figuera, there is no direct swimming beach like you might know from Porto Cristo or Cala Millor. Perhaps that is also the reason why mass tourism has not taken root here - fortunately, as this adds to the fishing village's unique atmosphere. But of course, there are still opportunities to jump into the cool water, and other great beaches are not far away either.
From the harbor, a steep, rocky footpath leads to the rocky beach of Cala Figuera, where you can easily jump into the sea and even enjoy some snorkeling. Not a fan of rocks and stones? No problem, as several other bathing paradises and beaches where you can unwind are already nearby.
More Wonderful Coves and Beaches
While you won't find a fine sandy beach in Cala Figuera, we still have some great beach tips to share with you. Some bathing paradises are located just next door and promise everything you need for the perfect day at the beach. So grab a rental car and explore the surroundings.
Cala Santanyi
This beach gem is located just four kilometers away from Cala Figuera. Look forward to a fine, soft sandy beach that gently slopes into the sea - an ideal spot for families. The bathing beach Cala Santanyi belongs to the same-named, idyllic holiday destination, where you will also find many great holiday apartments and hotels. Want more than just sunbathing? Then rent a pedal boat or book a diving course to admire the beauty of the bay not just from the beach. The bus line 503 connects the towns of Cala Figuera and Cala Santanyi.
Cala Llombards
Are you a true beach lover and sun worshipper? How about a day at Cala Llombards? This cove is among the most beautiful on Mallorca's east coast. The water here is particularly clear and clean, and the panorama is also stunning. The charming beach bar offers delicious cocktails and many other snacks to pamper you. Sun loungers and umbrellas provide the best comfort while sunbathing.
Like most coves and beaches on the east coast, Cala Llombards is framed by rock formations on both sides. Hike to the tip of the right cliff for a breathtaking view along the coast.
Cala Mondrago
Leave Cala Figuera heading north and make your way to the Mondrago Nature Reserve. This little oasis has thankfully remained a paradise for flora and fauna, where you will experience white dunes and shady spots under ancient holm oaks, and in front of you sparkles the turquoise water. To reach the picturesque bays, you must first take a short hike through the nature reserve. Keep an eye out for turtles and breathe in the fresh air, then you can appreciate the scent of the lavender growing here.
The two larger bays, S'Amarador and the eponymous Cala Mondrago, are especially popular. This beach day is truly something special, for away from Ballermann and luxury tourism, you can experience the true beauty of Mallorca. But be sure to arrive early in the high season, or it could get quite crowded.
Enchanting Excursion Destinations
Take a day to discover more of Mallorca's east coast. You can drive up the coast to the popular vacation destination Cala Millor. This way, you'll see more of the sun-kissed island and enjoy the long sandy beach, which is atypical for the generally rocky east coast. If lounging on the beach gets too boring, take advantage of one of the many sport offerings like biking to explore the landmarks of Cala Millor or participate in one of the popular quad tours. The weekly market is also a real highlight.
On the way back to Cala Figuera, we also recommend stopping in Porto Cristo, a charming harbor town with impressive villas and a lovely marina. Stroll leisurely along the water and marvel at what some people can afford, or take a detour to the Coves del Drac, the famous Dragon Caves of Mallorca, which are only a few minutes away from here.
Off the Coast of Africa
Do you love gazing out over the seemingly endless sea and sometimes wonder what lies beyond the horizon? At Cap de ses Salines, you experience exactly that feeling. For after the offshore archipelago Cabrera, there is nothing for a long way - all the way to Africa. From Cala Figuera, you only need about 20 minutes to get to the southernmost point of Mallorca. Enjoy a romantic sunset here and immerse yourself in a little melancholy - or take a trip to the lighthouse.
Also worth a day trip: the six-kilometer-long dream beach Playa Es Trenc in the south of Mallorca. Many consider it the most beautiful beach in Mallorca. See for yourself if Playa Es Trenc deserves the title of Mallorca's best beach. With a bit of luck, you might even spot pink flamingos that love to linger in the surrounding nature reserve.
The Right Accommodation
During the tourism boom, many hotel constructions sprang up in Cala Figuera, most of which have since disappeared. In the village, you can find affordable as well as upscale holiday apartments, often with a view of the fjord-like elongated bay or the quaint little harbor. Unlike many overcrowded holiday destinations, here, it's not about mass and luxury - the right flair and beautiful location of the accommodations make each stay unique and personal. A special recommendation with a charming view of the harbor is this typical old house for five people. The Casa de Musa also offers an equally impressive view, where you can enjoy the evening with your friends on the terrace overlooking the harbor.
