Porto Cristo
Another Must-See Spot in Mallorca
Porto Cristo is a small and charming harbor town on the east coast of Mallorca. Crystal clear waters, historic buildings, and the adjacent marina turn this place into a delightful vacation destination. Find out what there is to see here and why Porto Cristo is so popular.
Porto Cristo - An Overview
Are you looking for a holiday destination away from party tourism and dominant hotel complexes? Porto Cristo promises just that - and much more. With a beautiful bathing cove and fine sandy beach not far from the center, you will find the perfect place to relax here. Couples and families particularly appreciate the charming and friendly nature of this former fishing village. The famous caves of Mallorca, created millions of years ago and still captivating visitors today, are also located in close proximity. What else you can experience in Porto Cristo and what makes this place so special will be shared in my travel magazine.
Vacation in Porto Cristo
Porto Cristo is especially popular with families and couples and offers turquoise bays in a friendly atmosphere. You will first travel by plane to Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands. From there, you can take Bus Line 416 to the charming harbor town, which is still 65 kilometers away. A great idea for your upcoming Mallorca vacation is also a rental car, as this will not only allow you to comfortably travel from the airport to Porto Cristo but also flexibly visit many surrounding beaches and attractions. It takes about an hour to drive from Palma to reach the charming old fishing town located on the east coast of Spain's popular vacation island, Mallorca. Upon arrival, the old stone houses and magnificent white villas immediately catch the eye. You quickly realize that Porto Cristo has still retained its historical roots.
Impressive Beach with Adjacent Marina
The cove near the harbor is a true visual delight: turquoise, crystal-clear waters and fine sandy beaches await you here. A rocky wall on the eastern side makes the panorama even more impressive, and the nearby yachts lend a special flair to the harbor.
The beautiful beach of Porto Cristo gently slopes into the calm sea.
At the beach, you will also find everything you need for the perfect day of swimming: sun loungers, a volleyball net, public toilets, showers, and parking - although parking is extremely limited during the summer months. The central location of Playa de Porto Cristo provides you with a wide range of dining options.
Along the beach promenade, you will also find many restaurants and small shops inviting you for a short break or a leisurely stroll. One particularly popular spot is Quince Restaurante & Cantina, which offers not only a great view of the harbor but also vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Hotels in Porto Cristo
Are you looking for accommodation for the whole family or want to relax as a couple on vacation? The resort promises suitable accommodations for all needs and budgets. You can also find a variety of hotels and apartments in nearby towns like Manacor or Cala Millor. In addition to classic hotels and vacation rentals, Porto Cristo also offers private lodgings. From beautiful beach houses with sea views to a private boat in the harbor - here you have plenty of choices.
Discover Manacor
Manacor is the large neighbor of Porto Cristo and is only 12 kilometers away from the former fishing village in the Llevant region. Pretty patrician houses, watchtowers, and remnants of old windmills shape the landscape of the town.
The fruit and vegetable market at Plaça Constitució is open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 12 PM.
The weekly market at Plaça Ramon Llull opens every Monday morning from 9 AM to 1 PM.
Here, you have numerous shopping opportunities, and the town has something special in store for you: the pearl factory. In 'Manufactur Majorica', artificial pearls are created through a special process that was originally unique to Mallorca. Due to the high-quality craftsmanship, even experts find it hard to distinguish the pearls from the real ones at first glance - impressive! Maybe you'll even find a vacation souvenir or a nice keepsake here. The markets in Manacor are also worth a visit, where you can buy not only fresh fruits and vegetables but also local products.
Cala Millor - the 'Better Bay'
With 5,000 inhabitants, this popular vacation destination is the largest resort in eastern Mallorca. Cala Millor, which translates to 'better bay', truly lives up to its name. Nearly two kilometers of wide sandy beach stretch along the idyllic coast. The crystal clear sea and blue sky also do their part to transform the bay into a beautiful holiday destination. In Cala Millor, you can expect a variety of hotel complexes located near the beach promenade that extends to the neighboring town of Cala Bona. Consider choosing a room on an upper floor for a stunning view of the large bay.
Cala Mandia
A stone's throw from Porto Cristo lies Cala Mandia, a place that stretches around three coves. The main cove of the same name is bordered by flat rocks and is relatively narrow at 70 meters wide. However, it still offers a large area for sunbathing, as the fine sandy beach extends about 120 meters to the sea. South of Cala Mandia, you will find the cove of Cala Romàntica, which is also known as Estany d'en Mas among the locals. This lovely beach is not as romantic anymore due to its popularity, but it's still worth a visit, especially in the off-season, and you should consider exploring the hiking path along the rocky coast. The path will lead you to the end of the bay, where you can enjoy the view of the open Mediterranean Sea.
Millions of Years Old Caves
Perhaps you visited one of Mallorca's impressive caves as a child. The caves were formed millions of years ago due to changes in sea levels and are now a true tourist magnet. Porto Cristo is just a short distance of about two kilometers from the famous caves. You can choose between the 'Coves del Drach' and the 'Coves dels Hams'. The signage for the caves can be somewhat confusing as both attractions vie for tourists' attention.
The Dragon Cave and the Coves dels Harms
If you visit the Dragon Cave, you can take a boat ride across the largest underground lake in Europe and also enjoy a ten-minute live concert by the orchestra. The massive stalactite formations are overwhelming and captivate everyone. The lighting bathes the cave in a true sea of lights, making it appear even more mysterious. Due to the high number of visitors, unfortunately, tours are not offered. At the Coves dels Harms, you have the option to visit several caves. The cave La Cueva Azul shines blue thanks to LED lights, creating a very special impression. Additionally, you have the opportunity to participate in various guided tours. For the Dragon Cave, you pay a 15€ entrance fee (8€ reduced), while the Coves dels Harms costs 21€, and children pay half. You can read more about the Dragon Caves in my travel magazine.
