Mallorca is truly a diverse island. Romantic fishing villages, secluded coves, and lively cities are not the only things that contribute to this diversity; you should definitely not miss a visit to the Coves del Drac, the Dragon Caves of Mallorca! Here you can learn more.
On the east coast of Mallorca, near the town of Porto Cristo, is a sight that may not immediately come to mind when thinking of Mallorca: the stalactite caves Coves del Drac. What makes the Dragon Caves so special and why they are definitely worth a trip will be revealed now.
An Excursion to the Dragon Caves in Mallorca
The unique cave system stretches over 1,700 meters in eastern Mallorca. Artistically illuminated stalactites hang from the ceiling, underground lakes invite you to an extraordinary boat tour, and an auditorium provides space for concerts and other performances in a unique atmosphere. What people discovered and explored with awe in the 14th century is today a place that has lost none of its magic, even though many of its secrets remain.

The fairytale caves are now among the most important and probably the most spectacular sights on the island, open for everyone to see and marvel at during any season. They are only closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Admission costs $15 for adults from 13 years old, while children pay $8. For this - admittedly - somewhat steep price, you get a lot, as not only does the ticket include entry to the Cuevas del Drach, as the caves are called in Catalan, but also a boat ride over Lago Martel, one of the underground lakes, and a live concert. You can conveniently purchase limited tickets online in advance, just select the desired day and time. Note: During the peak season from March 13 to October 31 each year, different admission times apply than in the off-season, which lasts from November 1 to March 12. You can enter the Dragon Caves without a guide. No worries: getting lost like in the 14th century is definitely not going to happen here. Photography and filming are allowed, except during the concert. However, you should avoid using a flash and other bright lights.
The Picturesque Fishing Village of Porto Cristo
I recommend combining your visit to the Dragon Caves in Mallorca with a trip to the harbor town of Porto Cristo, as the quieter east coast with its quaint villages is a dream, especially for families and couples. Stroll through the harbor of Porto Cristo, visit the neighboring town of Manacor with its authentic markets, or relax at the romantic bays of Cala Mandia. In my travel magazine, you will find more tips for your trip to Porto Cristo and the surrounding area.
If you're still looking for an exciting destination during your holiday in Mallorca, I strongly suggest visiting the Dragon Caves. From the island's capital, Palma de Mallorca, you can reach the Dragon Caves in just about an hour's drive.
