A Historic Jewel with Modern Culture
When centuries-old history is still omnipresent in a modern city, that alone says a lot. Here you can discover what makes the beautiful city of Split in Croatia so unique and significant.
It is no secret that Croatia knows how to enchant us. Thanks to the Plitvice Lakes and its fairy-tale national parks, we might have already lost our hearts to this natural paradise. Today, however, I want to introduce you to another gem, namely a city that is unparalleled worldwide. Rich in history yet modern at the same time, vibrant and dynamic, shaped by significant buildings and colorful life: Split bursts with energy from both its historical and modern culture. For this reason, Split is often mistakenly referred to as the capital of Dalmatia, while it is actually the second largest city in the country, after Zagreb. But I don't want to keep you in suspense any longer; let me show you what makes Split so special.
Split - City, Beach, and Culture
Fascinating Attractions in Split
We owe today's vibrant and abundant Split to the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who had a grand palace built on site for his retirement. This was the beginning of a significant development that unfolded over 1,700 years. Walking in the footsteps of past years, past important historical buildings, a visit becomes an unforgettable experience. With a fine blend of present history and modern life, Split captivates not only culture enthusiasts but also lovers of good taste and beachgoers.
Majestic Structure Diocletian's Palace
One thing I can promise you: The beautiful harbor city of Split offers you not only a dreamlike refreshment in the Adriatic with a unique city panorama, but also noteworthy highlights and culture. However, one thing should be common to all: Curiosity to see the palace that brought the city to life - especially since Diocletian's Palace is still remarkably well-preserved and located in the heart of Split, which has even been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During the emperor's lifetime, the palace served not only as a residence for the ruler but also as accommodation for his servants. The original structure, divided into East and West, easily accommodated both groups without them getting in each other's way. While the palace lies almost intact at your feet, the ruling emperors over the years have added their personal touch. Did you know that some scenes from the hit series Game of Thrones were filmed in Split? For scenes set in the city of Meereen, Diocletian's Palace was used. You can find all the exciting filming locations of Game of Thrones in my travel magazine.
Four Magical Gates
However, what is characteristic of Split are also four gates which you can find distributed throughout the city. Naturally, each of these gates comes with a significant story. The passage through the Golden Gate, for example, was denied to the common people, and only the emperor and his family could walk that path into their palace. Today, millions of tourists and locals alike flow through this gate in memory of majestic times. Not quite as significant but still a true tourist magnet is the Silver Gate. Renovations kept the gate closed from the Middle Ages until 1952, and only after that were visitors allowed to stroll over the original pavement of antiquity.
From the Bronze Gate, you can easily access the cellars of the palace, and many tours make their first stop here before entering the palace.
Over the years, the Iron Gate has withstood, which is why it's often referred to as the city witness. Therefore, only the Bronze Gate, or the Emperor's Emergency Exit, is left to discuss its function directly. This gate allowed for a direct escape to the sea in case of a land attack. The central spot outside the palace is, then and now, the Peristyle Square, where the emperor addressed the people. In memory of this history, the square is still used today as a kind of stage for Split to host performances, including theater and opera.
Landmark Riva
After you've followed in the footsteps of Croatia's past, you must not miss the chance to partake in Split's modern life. When asked where the best place to do this is, there is only one answer: the infamous Riva promenade. Though its beauty also dates back about 200 years, today it is one of the most popular spots in the city of Split, where the vibrant activity is something you should experience.
Along the harbor promenade, adorned with palm trees, various events take place regularly, and restaurants and cafés invite you to relax. However, the Riva is no longer a hidden gem; rather, it is considered a landmark of the city, so there is always lively hustle and bustle. Located just west of it is the Republic Square, the Prokurative. If you can't find a spot in the cafés and bars along the Riva, you will surely find one here. The vibrant activity continues here, as events such as the Split Music Festival are frequently held. The square is surrounded on three sides by arcaded buildings, with the southern side open, offering a beautiful view of the harbor of Split and the promenade.
Idyllic Harbor Matejuška
Equally touristy is Marmont Street, known as Marmontova Ulica. While the focus is again on the historical aspect, restaurants and boutiques alongside cultural and art exhibitions have also settled here. If you want a glimpse into the lives of locals, simply plan an afternoon at Matejuška Harbor. Stroll through the fish market at Marmontova Square and check out the fresh fish that local vendors sell, starting from 6:30 AM. Sample the fresh fruits and vegetables at the market on Ulica Stari Pazar and let yourself be swept away by Croatian life.
Fishermen also like to gather at the harbor for a good glass of wine, and it's not uncommon for them to throw their freshly caught harvest right on the grill and unwind the evening together. It feels as if you are far away from the hustle and bustle of a big city because here you enjoy an idyllic serenity and immerse yourself in the vibrancy of Split.
Natural Paradise Croatia
Guru Tip: Just grab your beach towel or picnic blanket and find a nice spot in one of the green parks or right by the beach. Under the warm Croatian sun, you can't help but feel good, can you?
Of course, during your vacation in Split, you will be rewarded with beautiful nature. From the historic old town, it's only a short walk to the first sandy and pebbly beaches. Here, you can cool off in the azure blue sea with a view of the historic backdrop of the cultural metropolis of Split. Sustipan Park was once the city's first cemetery; today it is a green oasis in the hustle and bustle. Only the stone pavilion reminds us of the former cemetery, so no need to worry. If the thought of past times makes you uncomfortable, you can also take a stroll in Emanuel Vidović Park. Families, students, and children frequently visit this spot to spend their leisure time in the greenery of the city of Split.
City Beaches
When summer temperatures rise, both locals and tourists flock to the beaches of Split. Bačvice, Bene, Trstenik, and Kašjuni, to name just a few examples, are all great for sunbathing. Often, amenities such as changing rooms, showers, and small beach cafés enhance the atmosphere, creating a perfect vacation feeling. However, you shouldn't arrive too late, as the beaches of Split fill up pretty quickly once the peak season kicks in.
Excursion Destinations Croatian Islands
In addition to the incredibly popular cities of Croatia, Split and Dubrovnik, there are also so many truly magical islands. The excellent connections to the mainland enable you to explore the nearby island beauty Hvar: With crystal-clear water and lush green landscapes, a day trip to this sunny Adriatic island becomes a real highlight. Experience the vineyards and olive groves alongside picturesque lavender fields, and let the fresh air and fine climate bring you to a state of deep relaxation. But that's not all: Between the island paradise Hvar and the culturally rich city of Split lies the third largest island in the Adriatic, Brac. There, you can truly unwind at the postcard beach of Dalmatia, Zlatni Rat.
Action in Split - A Different Kind of Vacation
Should it ever happen, which I certainly don't anticipate, that you feel bored, I have a few insider tips for you: You can also experience the boom of escape rooms in Split. Within 60 minutes, you must solve tricky tasks and puzzles to free yourself from a locked room. Another highlight is the semi-submarine: Take a leisurely boat trip and explore the underwater world. Since the Marijeta boat is submerged about 1.5 meters into the water, you can get a glimpse of life below the surface through the windows or enjoy a round trip along the city's attractions from the deck. A great idea, isn't it?
If you want to experience local events alongside all the remarkable highlights, nature, and history, I have something truly special to share with you: The Ultra Europe Festival in Split, which takes place from July 6 to July 8. Numerous world-famous DJs, like David Guetta and Steve Aoki, rock the stage on the Adriatic coast, bringing the festival summer to Croatia. With the typically warm summer weather in Split, you can enjoy incredible beats under the Croatian sun and party late into the night.
