Kaptol - The City Center of Zagreb

The Kaptol is referred to as the city center, primarily serving as the connecting point between the Upper and Lower Towns. And that's a good thing, because it's nearly impossible to lose your way if you happen to get lost.

Sooner or later, you'll find yourself at Ban Jelačić Square, the most central point in the city. Yet, Kaptol is not only seen as the heart of the connection between the Upper and Lower Towns, but is also known for attractions that you absolutely shouldn't miss. Right here stands the landmark of the Croatian city, the Zagreb Cathedral. Built in the 13th century, this beautiful church has been continually restored and maintained over the years. Together with the Madonna Fountain in front of it, which is hard to miss with its four golden angels and a golden statue of Mary.

Good to know: The Upper and Lower Towns have been connected by a funicular since 1891. For about 80 cents, you can travel from point A to point B.

Colorful Market Life

To catch a glimpse of the locals' life amidst the typical tourist faces, you must not miss the Dolac Market. Often referred to as the 'belly of Zagreb,' it is very popular and known for its vibrant atmosphere. You can recognize it by the many red umbrellas under which fresh fruits and vegetables are sold. Feel free to grab some and enjoy Croatian vitamins. Hearty offerings, such as meat, sausage, and cheese, are also available in fresh quality. If you're craving these delicacies, your way will lead you to the market hall. If shopping has sparked your interest, this location will also easily take you to the famous shopping street, Ilica.

Crossing the border between Kaptol and Upper Town, you'll find yourself in the popular promenade Tkalčićeva. Even if you're not on your feet for long, you should definitely take a little break here.

The abundance of cafés, restaurants, and bars is so inviting that you can't help but sit down for a few minutes and watch the crowd bustle around. We can even imagine that after you've hit up our Zagreb tips, you may want to return here and let the evening wind down comfortably. Tkalčićeva is bustling all day long into the late night and provides a lively atmosphere. After a little refreshment, you can continue your sightseeing tour. One landmark you must include in your walk through Upper Town is the emblem of this district, St. Mark's Church in St. Mark's Square. Its striking roof makes it hard to miss: It is adorned with the coats of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia, as well as the city coat of arms of Zagreb.

Not far from St. Mark's Church, to be precise, right next door, you will find the largest building in the city, the Lotrščak Tower. For a small entrance fee of €2, you can not only visit the tower from the inside and see exhibited artworks but also climb it.

Don't Miss This!

At exactly 12 o'clock, a cannon from within the tower fires a shot to remind of bygone times.

We recommend the climb as well, because once you reach the top, you'll have a stunning view of the entire city. To not miss this highlight of the tower, we suggest visiting during the morning. In the 13th century, the Lotrščak Tower was part of the city gate, and the chimes were a signal for closing. Another remnant of the city gate is located just a few meters away. The Stone Gate is one of the five former gates. Today, you'll find a prayer shrine behind it.

Whether you visit the Upper Town or the Lower Town first from Kaptol is entirely up to your desire and mood. However, you must promise us one thing: Do not skip the Lower Town from your to-do list when you visit Zagreb. It's best to start your tour with a few beautiful hours in Zrinjevac Park, located very close to your starting point, Ban Jelačić Square in Kaptol. A vast green area lies at your feet, adorned with numerous fountains and small structures. If you have a picnic blanket with you, you can take a lovely break here.

The Green Horseshoe

Next, you can head towards the Botanical Garden. In our opinion, this garden surpasses Zrinjevac Park, as beautiful flowers bloom around the ponds, creating a breathtaking ambiance that is truly unmatched.

Together with Tito Square, which surrounds the theater, Zrinjevac Park, and the Botanical Garden, these sections form the so-called Green Horseshoe.

And since the beauty seems to unite at this location, the most beautiful building in the city, the National Theatre, is not far away. Other notable buildings, such as parts of the university, also reside here. Just a few meters further is the Mimara Museum, a gem for art enthusiasts. While an old high school in neo-Renaissance style awaits you from the outside, the inside displays magnificent works from renowned artists. The Lower Town, Donji Grad, will truly enchant you, as one beautiful spot leads into the next.

In addition to the many green parks, you'll find many beautiful lakes around the city. Are you still not tired after your long walk through Zagreb? Then at Lake Jarun, you have the chance to exert yourself. Strap on your wakeboard or water skis, and you'll be gliding over the blue waters. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, everyone will find enjoyment here, we promise!
