After reading this article, you will understand why we highly recommend a trip here.
Dubrovnik, a medieval city with just over 42,000 inhabitants, is located at the southernmost tip of the Croatian Adriatic and belongs to the sun-drenched region of Dalmatia. Once there, you will surely be enchanted by the diversity of this beautiful harbor city: stunning beaches invite you to swim and relax, impressive sights for sightseeing, and nearby excursion destinations make for a perfect, varied beach vacation. What more could you want?
Upon arriving in Dubrovnik, deep in southern Croatia, you should take a deep breath and let the romantic atmosphere wash over you. Dubrovnik is often referred to as a jewel of the Adriatic coast, partly because besides beautiful beaches, there are also numerous impressive city walls and fortifications. The fact that Dubrovnik served as a filming location for the famous TV series Game of Thrones is a testament to how wonderful the old town of Dubrovnik must be.
But besides the many sights you must visit, there are also plenty of activities to do here: exciting diving excursions, hiking and boat tours that showcase the beautiful surroundings, and thrilling leisure activities from wellness to parties will make a vacation in Dubrovnik unforgettable. Therefore, take a few days, find a charming hotel or stylish private accommodation, and then off you go - discover and fall in love with the Croatian city!
The Most Beautiful Beaches of Dubrovnik
Naturally, most vacationers are primarily drawn to the Croatian Adriatic because of the beautiful beaches. One popular choice is Banje Beach, a pebbly beach located close to the famous city walls and offering a gorgeous view of Lokrum Island. Another highlight is Buza Beach, a natural rock beach directly below the city walls, which provides access to the crystal-clear sea via rock steps. Both beaches offer fantastic views of the open sea and some offshore islands. Banje Beach is also known for its variety of exciting leisure activities such as jet skiing, paragliding, and boat tours.
If you are traveling with children and family, you should choose either Banje Beach or Sveti Jakov Beach, which is also among the most beautiful beaches in Dubrovnik and is just about a 20-minute walk from Banje Beach. Sveti Jakov Beach is located in a small bay below the Church of St. Jacob, and thanks to its proximity to the old town, it also offers a great view of the city walls. Additionally, it is a bit quieter here than at Banje Beach.
Now let's return to the view: If you want to enjoy a wonderful view of the unique Elaphites, the offshore islands of Dubrovnik, you must make your way to Cava Beach, a narrow pebble beach on the Lapad peninsula, which is part of Dubrovnik. Interestingly, part of this rocky, secluded beach is a nude bathing area.
Next to it is another beautiful beach section: Copacabana Beach, which is also one of the most popular beaches in Dubrovnik, just like Banje Beach. This beach is particularly favored by water sports enthusiasts, as it offers a wide range of activities from pedal boating to water skiing to paragliding. Another advantage is the accessible area, which is not commonly found elsewhere in Croatia.
You can also find unique beaches on the small island of Lokrum, located only about 650 meters southeast of the old town. Beautiful and romantic bays are surrounded by pine trees, and the rocky sections will undoubtedly delight adventure-loving cliff jumpers. If you prefer not only to relax on the beach, you should definitely check out the Benedictine monastery or take a leisurely stroll through the botanical garden.
Vacation Guru Tip: From June to August, Dubrovnik is in high season. If you want to avoid the high tourist influx, the months of May, September, and October are particularly suitable. Even during these months, the temperatures here are pleasantly warm at 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sightseeing in Dubrovnik
If you spend your vacation in Dubrovnik, you simply cannot miss visiting all of the beautiful sights. Although this charming harbor city has just over 42,000 residents, there is so much to see and experience here both historically and culturally. Above all is the old town of Dubrovnik, the historical core of the city, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
This medieval area is particularly interesting to see because of its imposing city walls and numerous monuments from the medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance periods. The architectural masterpieces are still in excellent condition today. A must-see here is the Church of St. Blaise, the city's patron saint, located on Placa Luza. It is a magnificent sacred building in Baroque style. Another highlight is the Cathedral of Dubrovnik from the 18th century.
However, the most famous and popular part of the city is Stradun, also called Placa. It is the largest main street in the old town of Dubrovnik and divides the historical core into northern and southern sections. Impressive sights such as the Onofrio Fountain, the city bell tower, and Sponza Palace adorn Stradun, which is also a very popular meeting place and event venue for various festivals. Once there, you should also visit the Fort Lovrijenac, located to the west of the old town on a 121-foot-high hill, and the Fort of St. John.
As you can see, Dubrovnik is bursting with attractions: churches, monasteries, and museums testify to the exciting history of the city on the Adriatic. And all these sights are just a fraction of what there is to admire. Make sure to take enough time to explore the countless highlights of the city.
Popular Excursion Destinations in the Area
Of course, Dubrovnik alone is reason enough to spend a vacation on the Adriatic coast. However, you should not underestimate the surrounding areas and the different vacation destinations. For example, there are the offshore islands, especially worth visiting for their pristine landscapes. Additionally, some exciting and historically rich cities just a few kilometers from Dubrovnik are waiting to be explored by you. Whether a detour to the most beautiful beach or the most exciting monument: decide for yourself how varied your Croatia vacation should be and plan an excursion if possible. Here is a small selection of the best excursion destinations in the area:
- The Elaphites: These so-called offshore islands of Dubrovnik are a breathtaking archipelago in southern Dalmatia, located just a few kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik. Particularly the island of Lopud is absolutely worth seeing and is only a 40-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik. Here you will find some of the best beaches in Croatia.
- Mljet National Park: Located about 55 miles west of Dubrovnik, Mljet is one of the most forested islands in the Mediterranean. We probably don't need to tell you how beautiful it is in Mljet National Park, right? Just to say this: You're in for pure nature!
- Split: Even though Croatia's second-largest city is a good three-hour drive from Dubrovnik, it's still worth taking a trip here. The famous Diocletian's Palace, along with the magnificent squares and numerous sacred buildings, are definitely worth a visit. Not to mention the lovely, inviting beaches...
- Lokrum: This uninhabited island is only a few meters from the old town and is just 1,600 meters long and 500 meters wide, yet it offers plenty of attractions. Naturally beautiful rocky beaches, the Benedictine monastery, and a botanical garden await you.
- Montenegro: As small as the Republic is between the Adriatic and the Balkan mountains, its diversity is equally rich. Beaches, mountains, forests, and mountain lakes invite exploration and relaxation. The distance between Dubrovnik and Montenegro is about 112 miles.
- Mostar: This charming multicultural town in Bosnia and Herzegovina is only a two-hour drive from Dubrovnik and was once seen as a connection between the Orient and Occident. Narrow, winding streets invite a leisurely stroll, and a special highlight is the old bridge of Mostar, Stari Most, which has a fascinating history.
Dubrovnik Summer Festival
Dubrovnik is not only known for its many sights, bathing options, and excursion destinations but also for its vibrancy. Especially in the summer, the many bars and clubs are well filled, as the nightlife of the harbor city has much to offer. One of the biggest highlights, overshadowing many other events, is definitely the 45-day Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which takes place every July and August.
This cool event boasts more than 70 different venues offering a range of performances from classical, jazz, and contemporary music to theater, opera, and dance. The festival is opened each year with a grand fireworks display in front of the Sponza Palace.
This year, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival will take place from July 10 to August 25, 2023.
