Traveling to Japan on a Budget - Exclusive Money-Saving Tips

Getting There - Finding Cheap Flights to Japan

Admittedly, flights to Japan are often not the cheapest. However, there are some tips you can follow to still travel to this East Asian country at moderate prices. The first money-saving tip for finding cheap flights to Japan is to book them outside of the absolute peak season. In our travel calendar, you can learn when the best time to visit Japan is, and consequently when most tourists are looking for flights.

From experience, we can say that traveling to Japan during the off-season is definitely worthwhile. Have you ever considered experiencing Japan in winter? Picturesque snowy landscapes, ski resorts with optimal conditions, unique festivals, and attractions that you won't have to share with thousands of other visitors speak for themselves. If it gets too cold, you can warm up in a traditional Japanese onsen, just like the snow monkeys in Nagano.

The second tip we suggest is to skip a direct flight and opt for a layover flight. These are usually significantly cheaper and still bring you reliably to the Land of Desire. We will reveal how to make your long-haul flight comfortable, despite the longer travel time, in our Long-haul Flight Tips.

Affordable Accommodations in Japan

The second major expense that you'll encounter on your trip to Japan is accommodation. Ryokans, which are traditionally Japanese inns, and hotels are largely not very affordable in Japan, but with some research ahead of your trip, you can still find accommodations that are budget-friendly. It doesn't always have to be an expensive robot hotel or the most popular ryokan; other budget hotels in Japan also offer plenty of comfort. Additionally, numerous vacation rentals and private accommodations are available throughout the country, which you can book for a few yen. We have gathered a few affordable accommodations in Japan for you.

Finding Affordable Vacation Rentals

You can find private apartments and rooms starting from €5 per night with us. You can filter private accommodations based on your needs and desired location to find the right one for you. Give it a try! Vacation Guru Tip: Have you heard of homestays? In a homestay, the focus is not just on the affordable accommodation in a private home but also on participating in daily life and immersing yourself in the culture of the local hosts. This way, you can not only stay super cheaply in Japan but also experience authentic life and benefit from the true insider tips from your hosts.

Affordable Capsule Hotels in Japan

If you prefer a classic hotel, you'll also find some budget accommodations in Japan. In many major cities, there are so-called capsule hotels that offer you comfort in a small space. Capsule hotels in Tokyo start at around €50, while capsule hotels in Osaka are somewhat cheaper. A night in a traditional ryokan in Kyoto can already be booked from about €60. I also have a personal recommendation for you: the newly opened Hotel Keihan Kyoto Hachijyoguchi really impressed us. For about €100 a night, you can stay in a modern double room and start the next day with a delicious breakfast.

Getting Around - Save Money with the Rail Pass

The public transportation network in Japan is perfectly developed - the modern high-speed trains, called Shinkansen, will get you from point A to point B. If you're planning to travel the whole country and be on the move a lot, we recommend the Japan Rail Pass.

You can order the pass online before your trip. Just select the number of days and pay the displayed price. The Japan Rail Pass is available only to tourists and helps you enormously in your quest to travel Japan affordably, especially since you won't need to buy a new ticket for each train ride. If you only want to explore a specific region, for instance, Kyushu in the south, you can also opt for a regional pass, which allows you to use all Shinkansen within a designated region for a specific period. The trains are - unlike what we are used to in Germany - always super punctual and clean, making train travel not only an affordable but also a reliable and pleasant way to explore Japan.

Alternatively, you can also find inexpensive domestic flights in Japan. This is especially worthwhile if you need to cover long distances, such as from the northernmost to the southernmost island. With the Japanese airline Peach Aviation, you can travel from Hokkaido to Kyushu for under €50.

Affordable Attractions in Japan

With the money-saving tips mentioned earlier, you can save a lot, which you can invest in sightseeing, for example. There is so much to see and discover in Japan, and many highlights are even free. If you need inspiration for worthwhile places to visit in Japan, we recommend checking out our many articles where we showcase the most beautiful regions and cities in Japan. Here are our absolute favorites:

✔ Walk across the Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo - nothing is quite as fun as being swept along by the crowd at what is perhaps the world's most famous intersection. If you want to observe the hustle and bustle from above, we recommend the second floor at Starbucks - you'll have the perfect view of the bustling crossing. By the way: The other Tokyo attractions are also absolutely worth visiting!

✔ Snap a photo of Mount Fuji - nature lovers certainly shouldn't miss Mount Fuji, one of the most beautiful peaks and volcanoes in the world. The lakes surrounding this extraordinary mountain, the Fuji Five Lakes, will truly take your breath away.

✔ Visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano - the sight of the macaques bathing in the hot springs is a special experience. And the entrance fee for this spectacle is more than fair. For just about €5.50, you can enter the park in Nagano. Vacation Guru Tip: Get the Snow Monkey Pass for around €24.50. It includes the entrance fee, as well as access to the Nagano Dentetsu railway, the Nagaden express bus, and the Nagaden local bus.

✔ Enjoy the natural spectacle of Blue Pond - the Blue Pond on the island of Hokkaido enchants with its intensely blue water. The view is so magical that Apple once chose a photo of this location as a desktop background.

✔ Stroll through Kyoto - there are few better places to experience traditional Japan than in Kyoto. Wander through the winding alleys, along the teahouses where tea ceremonies have been held for centuries, admire artistic temples such as the golden Kinkaku-ji, and let yourself be enchanted by the Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama!

It's going to be delicious, because our last tip for experiencing Japan on a budget gives you a little insight into the country's culinary scene. While good sushi can be considered a higher-priced dish here in the United States, you can find these delicacies at unbeatable prices in Japan.

Whether at the supermarket, food court, or restaurant - when it comes to sushi, you'll find nearly everywhere in Japan that you can satisfy your cravings. In addition to sushi, ramen is also a staple of Japanese cuisine. These delicious soups are served with your choice of egg, meat, vegetables, or fish.
