The Dreamy Southeast of Our Favorite Island

Quiet, traditional, and beautiful - true Mediterranean charm awaits you in Santanyí. Join me in exploring the many picturesque towns with their stunning dream beaches and let the Mallorcan architecture in the historic old town of Santanyí enchant you.

While the beautiful nature of Mallorca is somewhat overshadowed by the touristy Ballermann, it is ever-present in the southeastern part of the island - the municipality of Santanyí is a paradise for those seeking relaxation and authenticity of the Balearic island. Whether it's water sports, hiking, cycling, or simply relaxing in the sun - you'll get your money's worth in Santanyí.

This is Santanyí

Comfortably located as one of 53 municipalities in Mallorca, Santanyí is in the southeast of the island. Although the official languages here are Catalan and Spanish, you'll also get by speaking German, as nearly 10% of the population here are German expatriates.

What I particularly like about Santanyí: large hotel complexes won't obstruct your view of the beautiful Mediterranean. Everything is kept small and authentic, contributing to the charm of the region.

Getting to Santanyí

Santanyí is about 56 kilometers away from Palma, home to the international airport, which you can easily reach from any major airport in the United States. The municipality can be comfortably reached by rental car or bus.

The climatic conditions in Santanyí are particularly perfect for a summer vacation.

Here you can learn more about the best time to visit Mallorca.

Santanyí is one of the driest regions of Mallorca, and with its subtropical climate, short winters, hot summers, and an average of 300 sunny days, you can enjoy the Balearic island at its most beautiful.

Beautiful small towns in Santanyí

Like the rest of the south of Mallorca, the region is known for its breathtaking bays surrounded by picturesque and unspoiled nature. Unlike the areas around El Arenal and similar locations, it is much quieter here, making Santanyí ideal for a relaxing vacation, including for families and solo travelers.

The Town of the Region: Santanyí

A trip to the Santanyí region should definitely include a visit to the town of the same name. Stroll through narrow streets, past beautiful old houses and colorful stands with local delicacies, jewelry and accessories, beach dresses, and souvenirs.

Near the Plaça Majors stands the 18th-century Parròquia de Sant Andreu, and just a few meters away is the Capilla del Roser next to the beautiful Ajuntament de Santanyí, the town hall. I highly recommend taking a moment to sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants scattered around the historic buildings. Afterwards, you should not miss the Porta Murada, the last remaining part of the wall that once surrounded the town.

The quiet harbor town of Porto Petro is perfect for a cozy evening with a nice glass of wine. Sit down in one of the lovely restaurants and enjoy a picturesque view of the harbor as the boats and yachts return for the night and the sun slowly disappears behind the horizon and the masts.

Known as the 'Golden Bay of Mallorca,' Cala d'Or is one of the most beautiful spots in the region. With its small marina, where you'll find numerous cozy bars, restaurants, and cafes along the promenade, and white houses that create a stunning contrast to the turquoise sea, it's simply a feast for the eyes. Here, beautiful coves hug the crystal-clear waters, popular with divers and cliff divers alike.

The first beach I want to introduce to you is the unique natural beach Caló des Moro. For me, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca and even topped my poll - now that's saying something! Parking can be challenging here, especially since some streets are now closed due to increased traffic.

Guru Tip: Start your trip at the nearby Cala s'Alumnia, surrounded only by a few fisher and vacation houses and exuding wonderful tranquility. From Santanyí, you can reach it by bus line 505, and from there a short walk along a path will lead you to the bay of Caló des Moro.

Nature Pure at Cala Llombards

Cala Llombards Bay in the eponymous 450-inhabitant village is surrounded by only a few quaint small buildings and primarily pine trees and firs - here nature awaits you in its purest form.

Cala Llombards is perfect for swimming

Because it lies in the shade in the morning, is framed on both sides by pine-covered cliffs, gently slopes into the sea over a length of 60 meters, and features only mild waves, the bay is perfect for swimming. You will also find a lovingly designed beach bar right by the water, where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas. Embark on exciting snorkeling tours and then relax in the sun. Afterwards, tighten your shoelaces and head out on exhilarating hiking trails. Along the coast, you can walk from Cala Llombards to Ses Salines and on to Colonia de San Jordi - all with breathtaking views, of course.

Do not miss the rock gate Es Pontàs located off the coast. The sight of the bridge-like rock in the turquoise water is truly impressive. It has been eroded by wind, weather, and waves over centuries, and today it is one of the most striking natural monuments in Mallorca, situated between Cala Llombards and the picturesque Cala Santanyí. The cove, framed by rocks, invites you to linger with its crystal-clear waters and beautiful fine sandy beach. Families can also swim here without worry, as the beach gently slopes into the sea.

In the summer, grab one of the pedal boats from the local rental or explore the area with experienced watersport experts - the water is really wonderful. If you'd rather stay on land, you'll find particularly beautiful, natural hiking trails in the cove that offer spectacular views of the sea.

The Fig Bay: Cala Figuera

Further east, you will find Cala Figuera, the Fig Bay, from which you can easily jump into the Mediterranean and snorkel from the rocky beach.

Guru Tip:

You can easily reach the cove from Cala Santanyí via bus line 503.

The dark green gates and window shutters of the boat houses form a wonderful contrast to the fig trees and the shimmering sea. Spread your towel here, enjoy a delicious picnic, and take in the fabulous nature - but please take your trash back with you.

Natural Park Mondragó

It is really cozy in the unspoiled settlement of Cap des Moró. From there, it's just a hop to the breathtaking Parc natural de Mondragó, where besides rare orchids, birds, and endangered land turtles, three of the island's most beautiful beaches await you. Set out, hike through the paradisiacal landscape of the natural park with its diverse flora and fauna, and reach Mondragó Bay with its white dunes and shady spots.

My Secret Beaches

From Cap de Ses Salines, you can access Platja des Caragol, the Snail Beach, via a hiking path. Because it can only be reached by tourists after a short hike of about thirty minutes, it is not as crowded as other beaches.

Accessible only after a thirty-minute walk.

The same goes for the dreamy Cala Màrmols: You also start at Cap de ses Salines but walk about six kilometers in the opposite direction through beautiful landscapes to reach the fine sandy beach. You should be in decent shape and bring plenty of water.

Accessible only after a thirty-minute walk.

Near the village of Calonge, you will find the Son Alegre vineyard, where you can even enjoy an organic wine tasting. Well then, ¡Salud!

For those who prefer a quieter experience, the golf course in Cala d'Or is just the right fit. Vall d'Or Golf is a small course with 18 holes of varying difficulty levels, offering plenty for professionals as well. Discover more golf courses in Mallorca in my magazine.

Events and Festivals in Santanyí

Throughout the year, various festivals are celebrated in Santanyí. One of the most bizarre is the Sant Antoni on January 17. The costumed devils, known as Dimonis, parade through the streets with torches, scaring unsuspecting onlookers. All of this is in honor of Saint Antonis.

Every third Saturday in October, the Fira de Santanyí, a large traditional fair, takes place in Santanyí. Besides market stalls, you'll also find lots of unique items here. You're sure to find some beautiful souvenirs.

Music lovers will enjoy the Santanyí Festival Internacional de Música from July to September. Among other locations, Cala Figuera, monasteries, and churches transform into concert venues, where classical artists take you on a musical journey. A festival pass is available for €75, but you can also buy tickets for individual concerts.
