Discover the Beautiful Island Nation in the Indian Ocean
Mauritius is overflowing with palm trees, colorful flowers, green coconuts, and a fantastic underwater world. The white sandy beaches are just the cherry on top. Here, you'll find all the reasons for a vacation in paradise.
Top 4 Insider Tips for Your Next Vacation in Mauritius
Best Time to Visit Mauritius
Now that we've covered the theory, let's take a look at this island nation, because we associate Mauritius with paradise. Both locals and tourists enjoy a nearly tropical climate year-round. You could almost say there are only two seasons, which makes the country a year-round destination: From November to April, you can expect Mauritian summer temperatures exceeding 30°C, while the months of May to October are perfect for active travelers, with temperatures around 26°C. Due to the trade winds, I recommend visiting the East Coast from November to April and the West Coast from May to October.
Mauritius particularly impresses with a total length of a staggering 160 kilometers of sandy beach and crystal-clear water, which creates a dreamy contrast with its various shades of blue and green against the white sands. The island is perfect for diverse day trips that lead you to idyllic islands and lush, green forests.
Living and Vacationing in Mauritius
If you're planning a trip to Mauritius, you should gather the essential information beforehand. You know what they say: Different countries, different customs. Here's a quick summary of what you must pay attention to and what you need to know.
- Currency: Mauritians use the Rupee. Although the international abbreviation is MUR, in various regions, you might also see the abbreviation RS or MRS.
- Cuisine: Culinary delights can be found on all islands. The influence of French and Indian cuisines, as well as Creole dishes, has greatly impacted the local cuisine. Learn more about the country's cuisine in my Mauritius Foodguide.
- Entry Requirements: If you are planning a tourist stay, you have all the necessary documents with your passport. Only for other stays, such as for studying, do you need a visa.
- Vaccinations: You generally do not need vaccinations for a vacation in Mauritius. The only travel vaccination that some doctors recommend is for yellow fever.
- Language Skills: It is beneficial to speak English and/or French to communicate in Mauritius. If you wish, you can also learn a few phrases in Mauritian Creole to chat with locals. You will be amazed at how hospitable they are, and you're sure to pick up a few insider tips that go far beyond the tourist hotspots.
- Crime: When wandering through traditional markets, keep an eye on your valuables - pickpockets can be quite active here. Be especially cautious in the cities of Port Louis, Grand Baie, and Flic en Flac. Additionally, you should avoid isolated beaches and neighborhoods marked by poverty. The Foreign Office classifies these areas as critical.
- Regulations: If you spend a day on the beach, be sure to follow markings and warnings. Depending on where you are, walking barefoot can be dangerous - poisonous stonefish like to hide near stones and rocks.
Sights and Hotspots
From Port Louis to Grand Baie to Chamarel, Mauritius is full of surprises and places worth seeing. I'll tell you what you absolutely shouldn't miss and where you can find the most beautiful beaches and landscapes. With the Mauritius map, you can get a glimpse of this island nation.
Capital Port Louis
Shopping in Port Louis is a delight, not just at the market. Countless boutiques and shops invite you to stroll happily. The capital also offers traditional attractions. If you're in the mood for sightseeing, you can visit the Jummah Mosque, the Natural History Museum, and the Marie Reine de la Paix Park.
Culinary Delights in Grand Baie
Why is Grand Baie the most famous place in the region? Probably because it offers the largest selection for tourists. No other place on the island has more restaurants, cafés, and boutiques - not to forget the nightclubs and bars. If you want to enjoy typical Creole cuisine, I recommend La Rougaille Creole: Since this local restaurant is very popular, you should definitely make a reservation in advance. You can indulge in seafood, chicken, and curry. You should also try the local beer! You can enjoy typical barbecue dishes, curries, and fresh salads at the Dalon Grand Baie. The restaurant is located right on Grand Baie Beach - perfect for a hungry stomach after a long day at the beach!
Paradise Island Île aux Cerfs
Mauritius has no shortage of dream beaches, but one truly stands out. Known in English as Deer Island, it has little to do with the animal itself but is regarded as paradise on the east coast of Mauritius. Uninhabited yet extremely famous and beloved by locals and tourists alike, this beach can only be accessed by boat. Once there, you won't believe your eyes: powdery white sandy beaches surrounded by a turquoise shimmering sea. I visited the place myself and was so thrilled that I dedicated an entire article in my travel magazine to Île aux Cerfs - check it out.
Seven-Colored Earth Chamarel
A different kind of speechlessness can be found in the small town of Chamarel. Due to its volcanic origin, the entire ground is characterized by hills and waves. Affectionately referred to as the seven-colored earth, the colorful play of colors here is unmistakable. The palette shimmers with shades of green, red, yellow, and violet, creating a magical image. However, this spectacle has little to do with magic. Rather, this phenomenon is the result of the transformation of basalt lava into clay minerals. More specifically, after rainfall, a mixture of iron and aluminum oxide remains, causing the color effect.
Impressive Underwater Waterfall
Some time ago, I wrote about the fascinating Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius. Already from the airplane, you can admire the first highlight before you even land and your vacation truly begins. At the southwestern tip of Mauritius, right in front of the famous Le Morne Brabant, it looks from the air as if there is a waterfall in the depths of the sea. As unbelievable as it sounds - it's actually true. However, this is an optical illusion. But this does not take away from the beauty of these images, what do you think?
Excursion to Tamarin Waterfall
If you've packed sturdy footwear in your suitcase and are fit for walking, there's hardly a better excursion than to the Tamarin Waterfalls. Guided tours are offered to descend this majestic waterfall. There are seven steps to conquer here, for which you should plan for a whole day. The breathtaking view of the cascading water and the beautiful array of flora, including guavas, eucalyptus trees, and palms, will make you grateful for the opportunity to enjoy these moments for as long as you can and to capture them in photos.
Black River Gorges National Park
To really immerse yourself in nature, I highly recommend visiting Black River Gorges National Park. Not only is it the only national park in Mauritius, but also because you can experience the flora and fauna in its original state. This makes it a must-see for a family vacation in Mauritius. You can stroll through the island's natural forest across approximately 6,500 hectares and admire typical Mauritian plants such as the Dodo tree, the Chinese guava, or the ironweed. It's best to stick to the established trails to avoid surprising deer, wild boars, and other wildlife in their habitat.
Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden of Mauritius in Port Louis is also a beautiful sight worth seeing. While I've already introduced you to Port Louis, I believe this garden deserves its own attention - for this reason, I devoted an entire article in my travel magazine to it. After all, it is considered one of the three most beautiful and biodiverse botanical gardens in the world and is regarded as the heart of Mauritius. Perhaps you've heard of this garden, as one particularly spectacular and notable feature is the Victoria Regia water lily. Its incredible size and stability even allow it to carry a child across the water. The garden spans around 90 hectares, where you can become familiar with the diversity of tropical plants.
La Maison Créole Euréka
If you want to see with your own eyes how the early colonizers lived, you'll find an exhibition at the Maison Créole Euréka in Mauritius. This mansion is adorned with incredible architecture and should definitely be on the vacation list for historians! Don't be surprised on your way there; the house is located in the middle of a tropical garden.
Catamaran Tour to Gabriel Island
In the north, besides the beautiful Cap Malheureux and its famous church, there's another highlight: for about €60, you can take a day tour by catamaran and enjoy a day soaking up the sun. On Gabriel Island, you can enjoy dreamlike powdery beaches and a turquoise sea that invites you to snorkeling adventures.
Next Stop: Mauritius
Did you think that Mauritius is so diverse? Dream beaches, culture, and nature come together here, making a vacation nearly perfect. Depending on how you want to spend your stay, you can choose to be pampered in a luxury hotel or experience the life of locals in a private accommodation up close. One thing you should keep in mind: If you travel to Mauritius between November and April and choose private accommodation, always ensure you have enough bottles of mineral water, candles, batteries, and canned food at home - during these months, it is quite possible for cyclones to occur.
