The Botanical Garden of Mauritius
From Vegetable Garden to Tourist Attraction
From rags to riches or from a vegetable garden to a royal botanical park - this somewhat sums up the story of this unique establishment.
The Pamplemousses Garden is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere and ranks among the most beautiful in the world.
This story is almost 300 years old: In 1736, the French governor Mahé de Labourdonnais decided to create a garden around the gate of Pamplemousses, originally intending to grow vegetables. However, things took a different turn when the garden was taken over by a savvy businessman who recognized its potential and began to cultivate numerous spices. The park is also known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, named after the first Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Meter-wide Water Lilies and Sausage Trees
You've completed your history lesson, now let's move on to the really important things. What can you expect, and is a visit to the famous botanical garden worthwhile at all?
At the North Entrance, many giant tortoises can often be found.
While the park is not always drenched in lush colors, as when the flowers fully bloom depends on the season, especially in spring months, you can look forward to fantastic displays of colors. The best time to visit Mauritius can also be found in my Travel Calendar. But even when everything isn't in bloom, the garden is a pure natural beauty and has unparalleled diversity. Where else can you find such giant water lilies, some so large that a child could comfortably sit on them?
The Talipot Palm - the Star of the Plant World
In total, there are about 80 different species of palms; the Talipot Palm grows for 30 to 80 years, blooms once, and then unfortunately dies. However, this blooming period is absolutely breathtaking, as you can admire around 200,000 white flowers and thousands of tennis ball-sized fruits.
Highlights:
Be mindful of your head; don't bump it! The official site of the botanical garden has announced that one of these extravagant palms is about to bloom. So, don't miss this rare natural spectacle. Some trees and plants have the strangest names, like the Sausage Tree, whose fruits, to be fair, do resemble small sausages.
