The diverse capital of Mauritius will impress you
Mauritius - is there only sand and palm trees? Forget your prejudices and join me on an exciting journey to Port Louis. Be captivated by the many nationalities, vibrant city life, and rich history!
Nestled behind a mountain range, Port Louis lies on the northwest coast of the dream destination Mauritius. It is usually sheltered from the wind, the sea is as blue as anywhere else on the island, and the city buzzes with activity. While most tourists think of coconuts, palm trees, beaches, and endless relaxation at the other end of the world, I will show you today why it is definitely worth leaving your beach chair behind and planning a visit to Port Louis. One thing I can tell you upfront: the city is much more diverse than you expect and not only embodies all the cultures of the island but also presents a fascinating contrast between colonial times and modernity.
Come with me to Port Louis
Mauritius' capital awaits you
Port Louis is not only the capital of Mauritius but also the economic and cultural center of the country. Although the city may seem like just a small city from our German perspective with its 170,000 inhabitants, it is a true metropolis for the islanders. And that is how Port Louis behaves. There are numerous attractions, restaurants, shopping areas, and everything else that a traveler's heart desires. However, getting around is quite simple: Port Louis' city center is laid out in a grid pattern - similar to what you find in New York. Countless ships continue to travel from Port Louis harbor to Europe, primarily loaded with wood, sugar, and paper. The city has adapted to tourists and is definitely worth a visit, as every sixth Mauritian lives in this metropolis. Nowhere else can you dive so deeply into the cultural diversity of Mauritius as in Port Louis.
My Moris - touring with the locals
To get a truly authentic insight into the city, I highly recommend a tour with My Moris. With local guides, you will peek into hidden backyards, discover sacred sites in the bustling city, stroll through food markets, and truly soak in the cultural diversity of the island. Your city tour will start with a walk through the busy streets in the center. In numerous shops, you can admire the endless variety of spices and browse stores with various goods. Along the way, you will gain insights into the diverse cultural features of the city and can sample traditional snacks. The tour is completely different from the classic sightseeing bus tours and is highly recommended.
Attractions in Port Louis
To help you get oriented a bit better, I will show you the five most popular attractions that you absolutely must not miss. On the map, you will also find other exciting places in the capital summarized.
Central Market
Ah, the Central Market in Port Louis. If you have been wondering in my Mauritius Foodguide where to find all the delicious dishes presented - you will definitely find them here. But not only completed meals are offered, but also fresh fruits, exotic spices, and various handicrafts and souvenirs every day. The variety of smells, colors, and sounds is simply incredible. If you find the lively and somewhat chaotic atmosphere that typically prevails in markets and bazaars as exciting and fascinating as I do, then you should not miss a visit here! Bargaining is, of course, explicitly allowed.
Caudan Waterfront
When you think of Port Louis, you surely recall the famous images of colorful umbrellas that seem to float above a narrow street. You will find them in the Caudan Waterfront area. It is a great place to stroll along the promenade and watch the yachts docked in the harbor. In addition, there are numerous restaurants that will take care of your lunch needs. The area is well-maintained and offers a special highlight for shopping enthusiasts: At Caudan Waterfront, you will find over 170 shops offering everything your heart desires. However, the harbor is not only popular with tourists; sugar, known from the plantations in Mauritius, is also shipped to the wider world from here.
Aapravasi Ghat
Most of the inhabitants of Mauritius are of Indian descent, and it is quite likely that their ancestors first set foot on Mauritian soil at Aapravasi Ghat. This site is considered one of the first immigration points in the world. Starting in 1834, the site served as an intermediate and collection point for hundreds of thousands of workers who were sent to the sugar cane plantations of the island. After slavery was abolished in the British Empire, enslaved people were replaced by what were known as indentured laborers, who - in the case of Mauritius - came from the also British colony of India. Since 2006, the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and, together with the adjacent Beekrumsing Ramlallah Interpretation Centre, impressively showcases the history of colonialism to its visitors.
Historic City Center
Mauritius has a tumultuous past as a colonial state. This is evidenced by the historic city center, where the grid-like streets make it particularly easy to find your way around. Especially around Place d'Armes, there is a lot to see. The Governor's House and the Fort Adelaide built in 1902 are worth a visit. From the latter, you have an excellent view over the city. Unfortunately, you can only admire some buildings from the outside, as they are still actively in use today, such as police stations.
Exciting Museums
We all know the Dodo from Ice Age - a lovable, somewhat clumsy bird that is somewhat responsible for its own extinction. You can learn all about the real Dodos and their unfortunate disappearance from the list of species at the Natural History Museum. A whole exhibition is dedicated to the animals. However, the remaining flora and fauna of the island, which still fascinates travelers today, is also scientifically showcased here. The history of the people of Mauritius is addressed at the Blue Penny Museum. The museum is named after two stamps from 1847, which are among the rarest and most sought-after collectibles in postal history. The displayed specimens in the museum are said to be the most valuable objects on the entire island. This is exciting for everyone who wants to not only enjoy their trip but also learn more about their vacation destination.
Champ de Mars Horse Race Track
A final tip, but especially great, is a visit to the popular Champ de Mars horse racing track in Port Louis. No sport is more popular on the island than fast horse racing. Every Saturday, up to 30,000 spectators flock to the second oldest racetrack in the world to bet on the fast horses in several races, meet friends, and enjoy the thrilling atmosphere. See the racetrack for yourself and experience the electrifying vibe for a few hours-treat yourself to an ice cream in between and get swept up in the excitement of the other visitors.
