Visit the Unique Waterfalls of Croatia

Is your next vacation going to Croatia? If so, you should definitely take a detour to Krka National Park. What awaits you in this beautiful national park in Central Dalmatia is detailed here.

Krka National Park in Croatia is a true natural beauty! You will find waterfalls cascading through the wooded landscape, hidden paths, and small islets situated in the middle of a large river. Sounds like the perfect day trip destination? Everything you need to know for your visit is covered in this article.

The Beauty of Krka National Park

Location of Krka National Park

Krka National Park is located about 75 kilometers from the city of Zadar and 85 kilometers from the popular vacation spot Split,

The popular national park encompasses the majority of the Krka River's course, extending approximately from the city of Knin down to Skradin near the Adriatic coast. Another great starting point for your visit is the city of Šibenik, which is only 13 kilometers from this natural wonder. It's best to rent a car to reach the various entrances to Krka National Park.

The park is closed on December 25 and 26. On January 1, only the Lozovac entrance can be used. On December 24 and 31, the park is open until 12 PM.

Additionally, the park is dog-friendly, and you can visit it with your four-legged friend. Please bring a leash and, for safety, possibly a muzzle as well.

Within the park, cars must remain outside, but you will find both free and paid parking nearby the entrances. To explore all the beautiful spots, you should set aside one to two days. It's best to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon when most day tourists have gone home, and you won't have to share the stunning scenery with hundreds of visitors. A visit in the off-season is also worthwhile, as not only are the entrance fees significantly cheaper, but the park is also much less crowded. Just keep in mind that different hours apply outside of the summer months.

What Awaits You in Krka National Park

In Krka National Park, there are numerous well-marked walking and hiking trails that will lead you to the most beautiful viewpoints and waterfalls. So lace up your hiking boots, pack enough drinking water, and let yourself be enchanted by the unique backdrop while hiking! In addition to the roaring waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery, you can also enjoy views of blooming landscapes where deep blue lakes stretch out, as well as mysterious ruins and dense forests - a true natural paradise!

Krka National Park is a true natural paradise

If you're in need of a break after hiking, there are a handful of restaurants in the national park where you can recharge. On the small island of Visovac in the lake of the same name, there is another highlight waiting for you: here stands the Franciscan monastery built in 1445, which houses a small art collection. 30-minute boat tours to the island generally start at Skradinski Buk, the most famous waterfall in the park.

The most famous highlight of Krka National Park is undoubtedly the already mentioned Skradinski Buk. The longest waterfall in the park features water flowing over 17 steps into a shallow basin where you're even allowed to take a swim. But more on that in the next section.

Guru Tip: Instead of taking a boat from waterfall to waterfall, you can also rent a bicycle in Šibenik or Skradin and explore the park on two wheels. This way, you can experience even more of the surrounding nature. Within the park, there are 14 partially paved mountain bike and cycle paths.

Is Swimming Allowed in Krka National Park?

During your visit to Krka National Park, you will frequently see waterfalls that virtually entice you to jump into the water.

Swimming is only allowed at designated areas

However, swimming is only allowed at Skradinski Buk. Here, there is a designated area where you can fully enjoy the crystal-clear and quite cold water. Depending on the time of year and day, it can certainly get a bit crowded here. Therefore, my advice is: try to come during the off-season or in the early morning hours!
