Devil's Pool in Zambia
A Swim in the Thundering Victoria Falls
Have you heard of the Devil's Pool at Victoria Falls in Zambia, probably the most dangerous swimming spot in the world? Learn why bathing here can even be life-threatening.
Swimming in a waterfall - many of you have probably done that. It's often possible in smaller waterfalls since neither the pressure, current, nor the pull is really dangerous for swimmers. But can you imagine that there are tourists who swim in the thundering Victoria Falls, which are up to 110 meters high? Thanks to a small natural pool that has formed right at the edge of the waterfall, this is actually possible. Let me introduce you to the Devil's Pool, one of the most dangerous attractions in the world.
The Devil's Pool in Zambia
The special - and not entirely safe - experience, along with unique vacation photos, can be had at Victoria Falls, a waterfall between the African countries Zimbabwe and Zambia.
On the Zambian side, a kind of basin has formed over several millennia right at the edge of the falls, where tourists can book a visit. The basin actually resembles a pool. Since even a small moment of inattention can lead to a deadly fall of one hundred meters, the Devil's Pool can only be accessed at low water levels. The Zambezi River, which is the source of Victoria Falls, has low water flow only from September to December, making swimming somewhat safe. Only then can brave visitors swim in the Devil's Pool and take photos like these:
While the daring sit in the Devil's Pool, thousands of cubic meters of water continuously crash down beside them. The enormous power of the water is especially evident in the thundering spray that the waterfall produces. The mist created rises up to 300 meters high.
Fatalities at the Devil's Pool
You are not alone with this natural force. Local guides show the arduous path to the Devil's Pool and ensure that no tourist slips over the edge. However, this has unfortunately happened multiple times already.
There are no official statistics, but authorities estimate that at least a dozen people have not returned from a swim in the Devil's Pool in recent years. These individuals are officially considered missing. Tragically, an experienced guide even fell over the edge of the falls while rescuing a tourist. A swim in the Devil's Pool is certainly far from safe. Whether the experience is worth the dangers is something everyone must decide for themselves.
Would You Dare to Swim in the Devil's Pool?
I have already shown you other breathtaking and dangerous places where tourists repeatedly risk dangerous photos. For example, the Kjeragbolten in Norway, but I find the Devil's Pool truly extreme. Hand on heart! Who would dare to take a dip in Victoria Falls? Participate in the survey now!
