This hike to Kjeragbolten is definitely not for the faint-hearted and is only recommended from May to October due to the unpredictable weather. Beginning at the parking lot of the Øygardstølen Inn, which is best reached by ferry or bus from Stavanger, you will already have a breathtaking view over the Lysefjord and the village of Lysebotn before you embark on a steep ascent. You should prepare for a trek of 11 kilometers that passes over rough terrain.

Good hiking gear with sturdy shoes and functional clothing is essential. Because even in the summer months, the weather can change rapidly. A backpack containing a first-aid kit, snacks, and a headlamp should also be part of your equipment. It's important not to underestimate the trail and the effort required. Not infrequently, rescue services have to assist exhausted hikers who overestimate their own fitness and underestimate the path. Also, do not start your trip too late, so you don't return in darkness.

The marked trail that you should definitely follow during this adventure initially leads over bare rock. At times, some steel cables provide security, so sturdy hiking shoes and some hiking experience are a must. After about an eleven-kilometer hike, which takes approximately three to five hours one way, you will finally approach your destination and the highlight of the hike, quite literally: Before you lies the Kjerag Plateau. You've made it and will immediately be rewarded with a stunning view over the Lysefjord.

About 1000 meters above the fjord

From here, it's just a few steps to the western part of the plateau, where the unique and famous Kjeragbolten is located, a 5 m3 monolith from the Ice Age. wedged between two rock faces and nearly 1,000 meters above the abyss, it is not only a sight to behold but also an undeniable danger. One wrong step could be fatal here. Therefore, it is even more important to exercise caution if you plan to be photographed on the rock. Proceed carefully and do not rush when you reach the stone, trusting your gut instinct. Perhaps, in the end, just looking at it will suffice without stepping onto it.
