Which Travel Insurances Are Actually Worthwhile?
When booking a vacation, thoughts often revolve not only around the long-awaited relaxation but also around the long list of necessary insurance coverage. To help you enjoy your anticipation in peace, today I will show you which travel insurance policies are sensible and which ones are primarily there to drain your wallet.
The Following Travel Insurance Options Exist:
The long-awaited vacation is booked, but it will be a while until the actual departure. Soon the worries arise about what might happen in the upcoming months. Would it have been wise to purchase trip cancellation insurance? And what if you fall ill during your vacation - wouldn't a travel health insurance be beneficial then? The thought that your suitcase might go missing at the airport keeps getting pushed aside. Isn't there insurance for that too? Questions upon questions that can quickly dampen your excitement. However, if you take out insurance for every possible mishap, there's usually hardly any money left to enjoy with a clear conscience during your vacation. That nightmare ends now! I will show you which travel insurances make sense and which ones you can confidently decline!
Trip Cancellation Insurance: Worthwhile ✔
When it comes to travel insurance, most people initially think about the option of trip cancellation insurance. This precaution is not a bad idea, especially when there is a considerable time gap between booking and departure or when the trip costs a lot and has required significant savings. In the event of illness or an accident, as well as complications during pregnancy, house fires, or unintended cancellations, this insurance applies. If you have a chronic illness, are traveling with seniors or young children, trip cancellation insurance is a good idea. If a health-related emergency threatens the trip, you will not have to bear the cancellation costs yourself. But beware: This insurance does not cover all minor ailments. If you suffer from acute flight anxiety, forget to apply for your visa in time, or fail to mention serious pre-existing conditions beforehand, you can expect to be out of luck. In these cases, trip cancellation insurance will not pay.
Trip Interruption Insurance: Moderately Useful (✔)
Instead of trip cancellation insurance, which comes into effect in emergencies before departure, trip interruption insurance is activated in acute emergencies during your vacation. This means that once you have checked in at the airport, you can rely on this insurance. If you fall seriously ill during your trip and need to return home early, the insurance covers the cost of your early return. Costs incurred due to your early return will also be reimbursed under trip interruption insurance. Again, if you have a chronic illness or are older and prone to illness, you will find yourself well served by this insurance. Carefully consider beforehand how likely it is that you will need to cut your vacation short - trip interruption insurance is not exactly cheap, especially when an entire family needs to be insured.
Travel Health Insurance: Worthwhile ✔
I would strongly recommend considering travel health insurance. How quickly can it happen that you get injured on vacation or have an allergic reaction requiring immediate medical attention? Faster than you think. Therefore, it is worthwhile for both privately and publicly insured individuals to take out travel health insurance - even if the vacation is within the EU. To receive medical treatment abroad or even just to see a doctor, you need sufficient funds. While sometimes your German insurance card suffices for a doctor's visit abroad, emergency medical services and hospitals typically require cash payment. Moreover, these costs in Germany are only partially reimbursed if the countries have a social insurance agreement. The reimbursement of costs from countries outside Europe or those not under this agreement is significantly different: In these cases, the patient must cover the entire cost out of pocket. Therefore, it is essential to remember: If you fall ill abroad or are involved in an accident, you won't have to worry about the treatment costs with travel health insurance (this includes hospital stays, medications, etc.).
Travel Accident Insurance: Useful in Exceptional Cases (✔)
Since almost everyone among you is already privately accident insured in Germany, an additional travel accident insurance is usually unnecessary. This private insurance applies not only domestically but also abroad. However, if you are not privately accident insured or participate in so-called risk sports, the situation is different. In general, it is said that the more dangerous and risky the sport, the more sensible it is to take out travel accident insurance. But be sure to check with a reliable insurance provider whether the sport you are participating in is classified as a risk sport. If it is, the travel accident insurance will cover costs in case of injuries, accidental death, and possibly even rescue operations.
Baggage Insurance: Unnecessary ✘
One of the biggest concerns for travelers is the fear of losing their suitcase. However, you should not hastily purchase baggage insurance, as those affected often face misunderstanding and accusations of negligence. More specifically, the term 'gross negligence' is frequently cited when luggage is stolen. If your suitcase is stolen while waiting at the airport, tough luck - after all, you could have kept it closer to you and watched it more carefully. Were you robbed in the southern regions of your favorite jewelry? Again, you will not receive any sympathy, as it is ultimately your fault for wearing jewelry in public. No matter what happens, they will try to make you responsible for the incident and justify it with gross negligence. Thus, there is little hope of recovering lost items such as money or phones. However, there is good news: If your luggage goes missing during a flight, you are generally insured up to a certain amount by the airline. If a burglary occurs in your hotel room, your home contents insurance will come into effect. Only for the loss and damage of certain items, such as identification documents, glasses, and clothing, is baggage insurance useful. Since the costs of such insurance are quite exorbitant, I would rather advise against it.
Travel Liability Insurance: Rather Unnecessary (✘)
Normally, travel liability insurance is unnecessary if you already have private liability insurance. This also applies, as with accident insurance, not only domestically but also abroad. Thus, travel liability insurance is only relevant if you are traveling with small children and staying in a vacation home. Items can easily get broken there, for which private liability will not cover the costs. The same applies if you are enthusiastic surfers prone to little mishaps: If your clumsiness causes damage from your surfboard, only the travel liability insurance will apply, not your private insurance.
Rental Car Liability Insurance: Worthwhile ✔
Behind the appealing term Mallorca-Police lies the more understandable car rental liability insurance. If you rent a cheap rental car during your vacation, it is essential to also book rental car liability insurance. While most rental contracts already include liability insurance, the coverage amounts are often not proportional to possible sums that can arise from damages. In technical terms, we refer to minimum and coverage amounts. While the insurance provider usually only pays a minimal amount, the policyholder must cover the difference between the minimum and coverage amount. Therefore, with a rental car liability insurance, no unpleasant surprises await you. You see, there are indeed a whole series of travel insurances that can confuse us vacationers. However, upon closer inspection, it quickly becomes clear that not all of these insurances are necessary. Often, the individual needs of each traveler must be weighed before letting them drain your wallet. If you are still not sure where your next vacation should go, you can find inspiration in the travel magazine.
