Industry Meets Culture - Rotterdam Tips
The second-largest city in the Netherlands, the largest seaport in Europe, a leading trading and industrial city, and Europe's gateway to the world-Rotterdam has earned many titles in recent years, despite the fact that the journey to this point was no easy feat. After World War II, Rotterdam faced total devastation. However, the city fought back with all its might, and that is precisely what has made Rotterdam what it is today: a hub of art and culture that quickly captures the hearts of many travelers with its architecture and youthful charm. With our Rotterdam tips, nothing can go wrong on your trip to this trendy city in the Netherlands.
Getting There and Accommodations
Getting There and Accommodations
Since the Netherlands are our direct neighbors, the easiest way to get there is by car, rental car, bus, or train. There are no direct flights from Germany, so taking a detour doesn't make much sense. If taking a train city trip or traveling by bus isn't fancy enough for you, you can also sail from Hamburg to Europe's largest harbor. It's a more costly option, but certainly a unique way to arrive in Rotterdam. In this city of 635,000 residents, you'll also find a wide variety of accommodations. Whether you prefer hotels, hostels, or vacation rentals, you're sure to find something in this Dutch cultural center. And then it's time to get started: Discover the city of industry, arts, and students.
Highlights in Rotterdam
What makes Rotterdam so special is the variety of the city; once known as an industrial and harbor city in the Netherlands, it now has so much more to offer. Alongside Amsterdam and The Hague, it has blossomed into a popular travel destination. In particular, art and architecture lovers marvel at the impressive buildings, while the idyllic and green spots also captivate visitors. Thus, Rotterdam offers a clear contrast to typical Dutch cities.
Architectural Fascination
The variety of architectural styles comes to mind when we think of Rotterdam. There's the Erasmus Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge named after the city's most famous son, often reminiscent of an oversized harp. Other travelers see a swan in it, which is why it also bears the nickname 'De Zwaan.' Close by, you can admire another impressive structure.
Hotel New York once served as accommodation for American emigrants before it was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1993 after several years of vacancy. Its facade combines Art Deco and Jugendstil elements, making it a true eye-catcher alongside the modern skyscrapers. Did you know that Rotterdam has its own little Golden Gate Bridge? Not far from the New York Hotel, you will find the red Willems Bridge, which rests on two pylons and, upon closer inspection, indeed bears a resemblance to its big brother in San Francisco. Cross it to reach one of our absolute highlights.
Extravagant Architecture
On the way there, the construction of the Markthal Rotterdam, a reversed U-shape, will catch your eye. But just wait until you stand right in front of the hall. The first completely covered market hall in the Netherlands houses not only stalls with delicacies from around the world, pubs, bars, and restaurants, but also provides housing for numerous residents of Rotterdam. Be prepared to be amazed! From the entrance of the market hall, you will surely have spotted another intriguing structure.
The cube houses designed by architect Piet Blom are model homes that once housed boutiques and are now rented out. One of the cubes is even open for you to visit, so don't miss the chance, as the unusual design is particularly impressive from the inside. If you haven't gotten enough architectural highlights, then take a look at the vertical city. The three individual towers, consisting of individual, slanted blocks, form the largest building in the Netherlands.
Green Rotterdam
After all the monumental buildings, it's time for some tranquility and relaxation, don't you think? Rotterdam certainly has more surprises in store for you. For an overview, a visit to the Euromast observation tower is worthwhile. For €11.50, you have the opportunity to look over all of Rotterdam from a height of 185 meters. If you are traveling with children or are just young at heart, we recommend a visit to the beautifully designed Rotterdam Zoo or Miniworld Rotterdam. Definitely two highlights that can impress not just the little ones.
If you are worried that you will be overwhelmed by the spectacular concrete and steel buildings, take a break in the Arboretum Trompenburg, the city's botanical garden, and recharge in this green oasis. After crossing gracefully curved, white bridges, you can slowly make your way back toward the center, for you should definitely feel Rotterdam's maritime spirit. The Old Port is well worth a visit-small sailboats, single-masted ships, and barges gently sway on the water. Moreover, the entire harbor complex is surrounded by interesting buildings that are illuminated in the evening, turning the harbor into a true gem.

Culinary Delights in Rotterdam
Our Rotterdam tips are, of course, not finished yet. What would a trip to a Dutch city be without knowing where to find the best food? To ensure you are well-prepared for your journey to Rotterdam, we have a few important recommendations. Before you start your eventful day in Rotterdam, one thing is particularly important: a good meal. Our tip: Go to the restaurant Spirit near the Rotte, because nowhere else in the city will you get such a wholesome and hearty breakfast. You can dine here even vegan and vegetarian, as well as enjoy classic Dutch dishes. If you were already impressed in the morning, you should definitely return for lunch or dinner.
More cultural insights can be found at Rotterdam's markets. We have already introduced the market hall, but there are many other markets almost throughout the week. Our favorite is the Blaak market every Tuesday and Saturday right in front of the market hall. Just stroll through the aisles between the stalls and snag a few typical Dutch snacks: in addition to top-quality cheese, there's fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables. Flowers, clothing, and antiques are also sold at the Blaak market. For the evening, a dinner at Restaurant De Hef is highly recommended, as the cozy yet modernly designed ambiance offers typical Dutch dishes, seafood, and international cuisine of the highest standard. You'll also receive a matching wine, topped off with a unique view of the Koningshaven. In the evening, you can perfectly conclude your great day in Rotterdam here.
