Best Things to Do:
Colorful Procida
This Italian Island Looks Like It's Made of Cotton Candy
The island of Procida in the picturesque Gulf of Naples is not only beautiful to look at but also boasts authenticity and the perfect environment for a relaxing short vacation. I will introduce you to the island in detail and share my personal highlights.
Procida in the Gulf of Naples
As you sail into the harbor of Procida during your Italian beach vacation, you will be greeted by crooked pastel-colored houses, bobbing boats, and a few old fishermen. The tourist hustle and bustle of Capri, the honking of scooters in the narrow streets of Naples, and the cries of vendors on Ischia all seem so far away. On Procida, time moves more slowly, making the island in the Gulf of Naples an ideal vacation spot for a short trip. How to get there and what you can experience here? I'll reveal it to you in this article!
The Italian Island of Procida
The dense development of the island has its reasons, as Procida is the most densely populated island in the Mediterranean, and buildable land is scarce. The island, which covers only 4 km², like the entire Gulf of Naples, was formed from volcanic activities, and the bizarre cliffs and scattered craters still bear witness to this natural force. Procida is located in close proximity to the well-known and touristy Italian islands of Ischia and Capri. Here, things move at a much slower pace - crowds of tourists pushing through the narrow streets of the capital are (still) absent. The island couldn't be more authentic; everywhere orange and lemon trees grow, fishermen sit in front of their houses mending their nets, and a few cats lie dreamily in the midday sun.
You won't find large hotel complexes and a tourist infrastructure in Procida; the nearly 10,000 residents don't want that at all. They love their small, colorful fishing island just the way it is. Nevertheless, you can certainly vacation in this colorful paradise, as the people here, just like everywhere in Italy, are open, warm, and very hospitable.
How to Get to Procida?
Choose a room in one of the small hotels, or visit the small island as part of a day trip. You can only get there by boat from Ischia or Naples. Once you've managed to pull your gaze away from the pastel-colored harbor, you should especially enjoy the wonderful nature of Procida.
Hotel Tips for Procida
Theoretically, you could walk most of the island, or you can take small taxis that will also take you to the Vivara Nature Reserve, which is only separated from the main island by a short, narrow bridge. The view from the Santa Margherita Nuova monastery, which sits atop Punta dei Monaci, is also spectacular. By the way, you get the best view of the wonderfully colorful harbor from the highest point on the island, Terra Murata. Although it is only 90 meters high, it still offers a great view of the houses that seem stacked on top of each other.

In the evening, you should return to the harbor of Corricella and grab a spot in one of the restaurants. The menu mainly features fresh fish, the specialty of the island. I can recommend the Italian Restaurant Da Mariano directly in the harbor. When the sun slowly sets into the sea, the scenery becomes perfect.
