The city of Porec is located on the Istrian Peninsula in the beautiful northern part of Croatia. It lies along the Adriatic Sea, providing direct access to the stunning crystal-clear waters. Here you'll find a picturesque old town with narrow cobbled streets and squares, as well as a harbor with a waterfront promenade.
The city's origins date back to Roman times, evident at every corner. The current street layout is still characteristic of that era, with streets named Decumanus and Cardo Maximus. However, Porec was not only shaped by the Romans but also by the Ostrogoths, Franks, Slavs, Venetians, Austrians, French, and Italians - the city has a fascinating history you should have explained on a guided tour.
The urban area is on a small peninsula, with the island of Sveti Nikola located offshore. There's so much to discover that you certainly won't get bored. Attractions in Porec
Porec is a vibrant harbor town where every visitor is sure to find something of interest. Here we have listed the top attractions so that you can jump right into your Croatian vacation.
The Charming Streets and Slobode Square
The small streets and squares of Porec invite you to stroll and linger. You walk over cobblestones and can meander into winding side streets. The main street is named Ul. Decumanus, which runs through the entire old town. On both sides, you'll find small cafes, souvenir shops, jewelers, boutiques, and ice cream parlors. Be sure to take a little break and treat yourself to a refreshing ice cream! We recommend the ice cream sundaes at Gelateria Fontana. Fully recharged, you can continue your sightseeing. Besides the charming streets, you'll find the most important attractions of Porec along Strada Granda Decumana.
The main square is Slobode Square, also known as Freedom Square, where the Church of Gospe od Andela is located. This square is the ideal starting point for a city tour and hosts numerous events. Also worth seeing is Marafor Square, home to the remaining ruins of the Temple of Neptune. Be sure to stroll along the promenade by the harbor, where you can observe the many sailboats and yachts.
Euphrasius Basilica
You must stop at the Euphrasius Basilica. It was built in the 6th century and still looks almost as stunning today as it did upon its completion. The basilica is named after Bishop Euphrasius of Porec.
When you enter the interior, you will be overwhelmed: The altar area is adorned with beautiful wall and ceiling mosaics, and the central aisle is lined with columns. The basilica is a prime example of Byzantine art. Be sure to visit the atrium, the bishop's palace, and admire the many remnants from earlier times. It's no wonder that the Euphrasius Basilica was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, is it?
The Towers of Porec
As a coastal city, Porec once had city walls and towers to spy on and defend against enemies. Of the original eleven towers, three are still somewhat well-preserved.
The Pentagon Tower can be easily identified during a city walk thanks to the Venetian lion on its facade. This dates back to the time when Istria belonged to the Republic of Venice and is built facing the sea. Interestingly, three different towers were built in this location, one on top of the other: an ancient tower, followed by a medieval tower, and then the current tower built in 1447. The circular tower, built in 1474, now houses a bar with a terrace. The walls still clearly show the openings for rifles and cannons. From here, there's a magnificent view of the island of Sveti Nikola and the beautiful harbor of Porec.
Only a ruin remains of the Northern Tower, but after some research work, this tower is also set to be restored. It dates back to 1473 and is connected to part of the remaining city wall.
Baredine Cave
If you are in the Porec area, you must definitely make a trip to the nearby Baredine Cave.
Located in the small village of Nova Vas, it is easily accessible. You are in for a unique stalactite cave that you will certainly remember. In the summer months, guided tours in German start every 30 minutes, during which you can explore the five halls of the cave with a guide. Admission costs 75 Kuna for adults and 45 Kuna for children. You first descend nearly 60 meters down a narrow staircase, passing impressive stalactites and stalagmites. You can venture 300 meters deep into the cave and, with a bit of luck, observe the rare cave olm. These not-so-pretty creatures actually live in a deep lake within the cave but occasionally make their way into the accessible parts of the cave.
- Be sure to wear the right footwear when visiting the cave! The stairs are very steep and can be slippery. Since the temperature down there is only about 14 degrees Celsius, you should also think about wearing a jacket!

Excellent wine, such as Istrian Malvasia, is produced throughout Istria, along with high-quality olive oil. So if you are looking for a tasty souvenir for your loved ones, wine and olive oil are the right choices.
