'Please say hello to my mum': a local's guide to Grafton, New South Wales

Growing up in a rural area and then moving to a bustling city, I didn't fully appreciate the beauty of my hometown until I returned for visits. The town of Grafton, nestled on both sides of the Clarence River in New South Wales, is a hidden gem that continues to captivate me.

While it may be one of the larger towns along the north coast, Grafton still maintains its small-town charm, where locals can instantly recognize each other. I've often been greeted with remarks like, "You must belong to the Jabour family," a testament to the close-knit community.

While driving along the Pacific Highway, many travelers may remember Grafton for its iconic double-story McDonald's from their teenage years. However, once you venture beyond the fast-food joint and cross the bridge, you'll discover a town full of delightful surprises. From vibrant bars and restaurants to unexpected shopping finds, Grafton offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors.

The heart of Grafton town glistens with the vibrant hue of blooming Jacaranda trees.

The true magnificence of Grafton comes into play during the Jacaranda season, which typically falls on the last week of October and extends into the first week of November. This is an ideal time for tourists to get the best out of Grafton through the annual Jacaranda festival, featuring a float procession, bazaar-style retail spaces, and breathtaking fireworks display. The festivity commences with the crowning of the Jacaranda Queen, marking the beginning of a week-long celebration. With a multitude of activities planned, the town comes alive with an authentic carnival-like experience, with even school children enjoying a day off on "Jacaranda Thursday".

Immerse yourself in the local culture by strolling around the charming streets, catching a show at the retro yet classy Saraton Cinema, and sampling the diverse gastronomic delights offered by numerous cafes and pubs.

Just a short 20-minute journey from Grafton are some of the region's most stunning beaches like Minnie Water and Wooli, rivaling the renown of Byron Bay. If intimidating waves aren't your cup of tea, Grafton boasts one of the finest local pools, characterized by extensive grassy areas, an exciting waterslide and a separate pool for children.

If you're visiting Grafton in New South Wales, take a leisurely 15-minute drive to Ulmarra, a charming village worth exploring. Indulge in a riverside lunch at the local pub and immerse yourself in the delightfully eccentric bookshop, where books are stacked haphazardly, creating an atmosphere that feels whimsical and enchanting.

In addition to Ulmarra, Grafton boasts a shopping center that may not be a must-visit, but if you happen to have some free time and come across a woman with a Northern Irish accent, don't forget to say hello to my mum!

As for getting around Grafton and its surrounding areas, having a car is highly recommended. It's essential for reaching the pool, trying out various dining establishments, exploring the beautiful beaches, and navigating Grafton itself.

This area has offered me a wealth of delightful discoveries. Further, why not enjoy the finest steak in town, meticulously prepared by my cousin Brad Pye at the time-honored Grafton Hotel. This appraisal is unbiased and purely based on merit. However, when it comes to Thai food, the Annola Thai Restaurant situated on Prince Street is unmatched in my book and indeed one of the top Thai establishments in Australia. Big River Pizza, on the other hand, steals the show with its outstanding pizza, ranking as my number one choice in Australia.

Ideal Time to Visit: Travelling in the months of October and November will not disappoint you due to the blooming jacarandas that create a magificent sight and the excellent conditions for swimming are a delightful bonus.
