The Gateway to Australia's West Coast
Australia's Metropolis on the West Coast
The Mediterranean and sunny climate makes Perth, the sunniest major city in Australia with 3000 hours of sunshine per year, a popular travel destination year-round, with winter months often being short and mild. In this article, I will show you the most beautiful corners of this charming city. Let's get started!
How to Get to Perth
Perth is located between the Swan River and one of the largest city parks in the world, Kings Park. The transportation options are diverse, with a well-developed airport network serving many international flights. Already in Australia? Then you can head to the West Coast by train or domestic flight. The legendary Indian Pacific, the longest straight railway line in the world, connects the Pacific with the Indian Ocean and travels 4,352 kilometers through the Australian desert and plains, reaching its destination in Perth after 69 hours. This route is a true cult and world-famous. A more luxurious arrival can be made with one of the cruise ships that regularly visit the port of Fremantle, a charming district of Perth, as part of a cruise in the summer.
Transportation Options:
- Bus: only bookable as an experience tour, e.g. Adelaide - Perth
- Train routes: e.g. from Sydney or Adelaide to Perth
- Flight: from several major U.S. airports with a layover
- Cruise: here you can find cruise deals
A Special Way of Life
The people of Perth enjoy their lives in this vibrant and charismatic city. Countless cozy cafés invite you to linger, while trendy clubs set the right mood in the evening. Socializing is very important here, and Perth regularly ranks on the Top 10 list of the most attractive, livable, and friendliest cities in the world.
Australians love good coffee and enjoy delightful cuisine, which is reflected in the many street food offerings. During the summer months, every Friday between 4:30 PM and 9:30 PM, you can treat your taste buds at the Twilight Hawkers Market. Locals love to stop by to meet friends in a relaxed atmosphere and kick off the weekend with live music. About 40 different colorful market stalls offer delicacies from a total of 30 countries, making for an exciting culinary journey around the world!
Powdery Beaches in Perth
In addition to plenty of sunshine and good food, the numerous white sandy beaches in Perth also bring great joy and relaxation. Although Perth is a real city with around two million inhabitants, many beaches can be reached in about 15 minutes. Most beaches offer public restrooms and showers, and you can freely use the BBQ grills available at many popular picnic spots. Here, too, it becomes evident that socializing and community play a significant role in Australia. When the beach day is slowly coming to an end, and you don't want to leave the beautiful backdrop just yet, treat yourself to a cold drink at one of the nearby restaurants and cafés while watching the sunset. It seems like it gently sinks into the sea - a breathtaking sight!
Good Vibes and Relaxation in Fremantle
During your stay in Perth, you should definitely visit the Fremantle district. Locals affectionately call this charming place 'Freo' and love to come here to enjoy the weekend in a relaxed atmosphere. On weekends, the centuries-old Fremantle Market opens its doors, and a visit is definitely worthwhile! On the Cappuccino Strip in the center of Freo, you'll find numerous cafés and restaurants. Additionally, many street musicians bring smiles to passersby and create a lively atmosphere. In the evening, tourists often meet at the local brewery Little Creatures, renowned beyond borders for its characterful and refreshingly bitter beer. Next to the brewery, you will find the associated restaurant with an open kitchen, stylish atmosphere, and a spectacular view of Freo's harbor.
Rottnest Island - Home to Animal Photo Stars
The beautiful Rottnest Island is located only 19 kilometers from Fremantle and can be easily reached by ferry. Turquoise bays, fine sandy beaches, and a picturesque backdrop await you. Rottnest Island is a popular destination to escape everyday life and enjoy a short vacation. Although the island is no longer a hidden gem and is quite well developed touristically, no cars are allowed on the island. It is a true nature paradise that provides a home for many animals and plants that need to be protected.
Among the residents is the adorable quokka, the smallest kangaroo species in the world and a true photo star. Tourists have made taking a picture with the cute little fluffball a must-do on their itinerary. For your exploration, it's best to hop on a bike; rental stations can be found directly at the harbor. Are you a true water enthusiast? Then grab a mask and snorkel and dive into the colorful underwater world. Or rent a surfboard and try to catch the best waves. Surf spots like Strickland or Salmon Bay are particularly well-suited for that. Rottnest Island is an absolute must-do if you're in Perth; here you can truly unwind!
Nature at its Best in Kings Park
Spanning 400 hectares, the gigantic park right next to Perth's city center provides a popular meeting place for young and old. Marked paths lead you through the green landscape, where you can learn more about Australia's nature and history. The views from here are also impressive. As Kings Park is located on a hill, you look directly at the city center of this vibrant metropolis. A view that is particularly stunning in the evening! In the summer, part of the park transforms into an open-air cinema, with the latest movie screenings coinciding with sunset. You can sink into one of the cozy bean bags and enjoy chilled drinks from the bar. Be sure to reserve tickets in advance, as this offer is very popular.
The Gateway to the Unforgettable West Coast
