Overview of Melbourne

Melbourne is located in the southeastern part of the Australian continent. The city can be reached via the airports in Avalon or Tullamarine.

With 4,250,000 residents, Melbourne is Australia's second-largest city. Only Sydney has more inhabitants, with just under 4,630,000 residents, compared to the capital of Victoria.

Melbourne is divided into four different suburbs: 'North', 'East', 'South-East', and 'West', as well as the city center. Geographically speaking, Melbourne actually consists of a total of 217 neighborhoods.

The various neighborhoods are as colorful as the culture of the Australian metropolis. In Melbourne, you will find traces of British, Greek, Italian, Irish, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Croatian immigrants.

Melbourne is Australia's number one sports capital. Not only does it host the Tennis Grand Slam, but also a Formula 1 race, the motorcycle Grand Prix, American football, and cricket. The Melbourne Cricket Ground even hosted the Summer Olympics in 1956 and 2000.

For those who have thoroughly explored the city, there are great excursion destinations in the immediate vicinity, such as Phillip Island, the Mornington Peninsula recreation area, or the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park. This way, you can make the most of your time in Melbourne. It is recommended to book a rental car for this.

Melbourne offers a variety of accommodations for every budget. Since many backpackers and students come here, there are also numerous affordable hostels and hotels.

For seven years, Melbourne held the number one spot for the most livable cities in the world - according to a study by The Economist. In the latest study, the city was overtaken by Vienna, the capital of Austria, but remains in second place.

Attractions in Melbourne

The most interesting way to get to know Melbourne's city center and its attractions is definitely by taking a ride on the City Circle Tram (Line 35). Since 1994, this city tram has been operating clockwise and counterclockwise through the city center for free. You should take the full 50 minutes of ride time to really enjoy everything, as this gives you a perfect overview of Melbourne's sights. You can board at many well-known locations. For those looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city center, a sightseeing boat tour on the Yarra River is a great alternative, allowing you to experience Melbourne's skyline.

Fantastic Views and Relaxing Oases

For a different perspective of Melbourne, you should head over to the Eureka Tower and take the elevator up to the 88th floor in just 40 seconds. The view from 280 meters high is breathtaking, especially in the evening when the city is illuminated-it's a dream. A unique experience is The Edge, a retractable glass box with a transparent floor that offers a special view of Melbourne.

Once you have solid ground beneath your feet again, make sure to head to the heart of Melbourne. Federation Square is alive with activity, where you might stumble upon a fashion show or a rock concert happening spontaneously.

If you seek some peace and solitude, I recommend the Royal Botanic Gardens. This expansive and beautifully green garden is perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing, and you can enjoy a snack at the café by the water. Alternatively, you can take a guided tour with an Aboriginal guide, who will share the fascinating history of the area.

The Melbourne Zoo and the Melbourne Aquarium will captivate you with their fascinating array of wildlife. Here, you can discover animals that you won't find in our zoos. I'm sure the fluffy koalas will enchant you.

Trendy Neighborhoods and Beautiful Beaches

History enthusiasts should visit the Shrine of Remembrance, a significant war memorial, while creatives can feast their eyes on the vibrant Fitzroy neighborhood. Fashion lovers will find themselves at home in Prahran and South Yarra.

Before you watch the sunset at St. Kilda Beach, make sure to visit the Queen Victoria Market and grab a bite at the many street food stalls. You should plan an extra day for a thorough visit. To wrap up your evening, it's best to visit the Docklands, Melbourne's trendy and extravagant waterfront district. Australia's connection to the United Kingdom is particularly evident here, as you will find 'the little sister' of the London Eye, the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, head to the rooftop bar on Curtin House and enjoy a great film at this outdoor cinema, which transforms every evening.

Sporting Melbourne

To truly enjoy the city's vibe, you shouldn't miss attending one of its numerous sporting events, as Australians are fervent sports fans. If you're there at the right time, you might catch the Tennis Grand Slam at Rod Laver Arena or the opening race of Formula 1. Motorcycle enthusiasts can witness thrilling machines zoom past during the motorcycle Grand Prix, while others may prefer to attend local sports events such as Australian football or cricket.

Once a year, the excitement reaches unprecedented heights during the Melbourne Cup. This traditional horse race is so significant that it has even been granted its own holiday to allow as many Aussies as possible to enjoy the spectacle.

Surfing at St. Kilda Beach

Do you want to get active? I highly recommend St. Kilda Beach. Wind and kite surfers find optimal conditions here. If you're passionate about surfing or plan to take a beginner's course, this is the perfect spot. After spending hours in the water, you can relax on the beach and watch the pros gracefully ride the waves.

My Tip: Rent a Bike!

Explore Melbourne by bike

Whenever you have the chance, you should rent a bike to explore the city's beautiful sights and highlights. This way, you can be active, discover the city at your own pace, and stop wherever you want. The best tip for this is Melbourne Bike Share, where you can rent bikes at various stations throughout the city center and return them at your convenience. A day pass costs $3 if you use the bike for less than 45 minutes at a time and return it to the station-additional costs may apply if you exceed this time, but they are manageable. If you prefer to be guided by an experienced guide, you can join a guided tour with Real Melbourne Bike Tours.

Nature at its Best and Wild Animals

For those who think that Melbourne is the only highlight of Victoria, let me assure you that there are true treasures nearby or within one or two hours' drive.

The ultimate excursion tip is the small island Phillip Island. Large crowds of little penguins make their way across the beach to their homes in the evenings-a truly cool and unique sight. Ecotourism is a significant theme here, with sustainable and animal welfare-oriented visiting options making the island a favorite excursion destination in the region. Your visit helps support the island's research facilities and preserves its natural and original state.

Nature at its Best and Wild Animals

Another animal highlight can be found in the well-known recreational area of Mornington Peninsula and in the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park there. You can participate in daytime and nighttime tours and meet koalas, Tasmanian devils, and other fascinating animal species.

In general, the peninsula near Melbourne offers visitors the best variety. The colorful wooden houses lining the beautiful sandy beaches are a sight to behold, as well as Melbourne's only natural hot spring, the Peninsula Hot Springs. You can relax there after an exhausting diving excursion or a round of golf.

Charming Goldfields

For those wishing to get up close with Victoria's history, a trip to Goldfields should be on the agenda. The name is truly telling, as this beautiful place with its charming Victorian buildings recorded Victoria's first gold finds. Although the 'golden times' are said to be long gone, maybe someone among you will find a nugget? A ride on a paddle steamer along the Murray River is also highly recommended. It will make you feel like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, don't you think?

Culinary Tips for Melbourne

Australia is known for its incredible diversity of restaurants. In modern metropolises like Melbourne, you'll find it hard to decide which culinary delight to try next. Whether you enjoy sampling local delicacies at markets or are on the lookout for the perfect brunch spot, here are some tips that will surely help you.

Street Food and Markets

There's nothing better than strolling through street food and regional markets, tasting different products, and simply observing the hustle and bustle. A must-visit is the Dandenong Market at the corner of Clow & Cleeland Street. Here, you will be treated to a fantastic selection of great products and foods on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The market is quite large, so be sure to bring plenty of time, and if possible, join a Food Discovery Tour, which you can book on the market's website. You can also find similar large selections at the Prahan Market and the Queen Victoria Market (both closed on Mondays).

If you stay longer in the city and enjoy vegetarian and local options, don't miss the Veg Out St Kilda Farmers' Market near St. Kilda Beach (Peanut Farm Reserve, Chaucer Street, St Kilda), which takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 8:30 AM to 1 PM.

But keep your eyes open, because in such a food-crazy metropolis like Melbourne, there is almost a market worth visiting every weekend of the year.

Brunch & Lunch

If you're on vacation, you should regularly dine out and sample the menus of trendy and popular cafes and restaurants. I've selected five hot spots for brunch and lunch for you-but you can be sure there are many more to discover.

  • Top Paddock Café: Acai bowls, avocado toast, and various unique dishes
  • CRU: Eggs Benedict, hash browns, and pancakes for the perfect brunch
  • Auction Rooms: Brioche, a breakfast board with various options, and excellent coffee in a lovely atmosphere
  • Rice Paper Scissors: A selection of modern Asian dishes and fresh salads for a light lunch
  • Sezar: Modern oriental dishes and fresh fish in perfect combination
