Magaluf in Mallorca

Magaluf in Mallorca is as famous as it is notorious. This is mainly due to the fact that the place has become a real party hotspot for the British. Therefore, there have been specific behavior rules in place for some time. I've taken a closer look at whether they are being followed.

'Oral sex contests in Magaluf' - with headlines like these, Mallorca's British party stronghold always grabs attention. The small village, about 20 minutes from Balearic Island, has been a scene of excess behavior for years. Urinating on walls, shouting in the streets, and brawls are among the lesser offenses. This is reason enough for residents and politicians to take action. New behavior rules are supposed to put an end to the madness. What has happened since their introduction?

Magaluf - Excesses, but Also Beautiful Sides

Magaluf does not lag behind Balearic Island. Especially among the British, this Mallorca destination is the choice for wild escapades of thirsty tourists. In 2014, Magaluf made international headlines due to a sex video. The film showed a young woman performing oral sex with multiple men. Local press reported that actual oral sex contests were being held in bars - in exchange, women received free drinks.

The 4,000-resident community did not want to tolerate this any longer. Following the example of the island's capital, Palma, which banned drinking in public streets around Balearic Island last year, Magaluf is now implementing strict behavior rules.

Behavior Rules for Magaluf

In addition to drinking and other excesses, the authorities also want to combat the notorious 'Balconing' - a dangerous stunt where one jumps from one balcony to another or into the hotel pool from heights. In 2014, six young people died, and further deaths occurred in May 2015 and August 2016.

  • No drinks outdoors between 10 PM and 8 AM.
  • Sale of alcoholic beverages prohibited after midnight.
  • 'Topless' is only allowed at the beach or immediate beach proximity.
  • Strict restrictions for organized pub crawls.
  • Sexual acts should be strictly prohibited by local owners.

A Long Way to Go

To what extent the behavior rules will actually bring about civility in Magaluf remains questionable. Even in 2016, the party excesses continued, and there is still a considerable way to go when it comes to the implementation and enforcement of the established rules. At Balearic Island, there has hardly been any noticeable change in the typical irresponsibility since the new regulations came into effect. Another plan aims to support the success of the image transformation: expensive hotel complexes are to be built in the coming years, attracting a different type of audience to the Mallorca town and driving away the excessive party tourists. Additionally, there is already an eco-tax aimed at preserving and developing eco-projects.

The Beautiful Sides of the Party Hub Magaluf

Not only notorious but also truly beautiful is it here, in the southwest of Mallorca. It's no wonder that the British flock here every summer, especially enjoying themselves at Playa de Magaluf. Similar to Balearic Island, many young adults frequent this area, with the average age likely between 18 and 30 years; during the summer holidays, some families also come. The long promenade is lined with hotels, and pubs, restaurants, and bars invite you to have some refreshing fun; the atmosphere is always lively. The beach is spacious, but in summer it can get crowded quickly, as towels line the sunbeds, and vendors stroll through the rows, constantly suggesting new sunglass models to bathers. For those who prefer it quieter, there are several small and much more serene coves nearby.

Great Beaches and Coves Near Magaluf

Cala Falcó

Very small but also delightful is the somewhat hidden Cala Falcó, which is best reached by car. Just head south towards Cap de Cala Figuera and follow the signs for Cap de Falcó. Do make sure to go via Cala Vinyes, so you avoid having to walk down 250 steps to the beach and only have to take a few. There are usually plenty of parking spaces.

The 'Three Finger Bay' Cala Portals Vells is a real gem, as you can sunbathe in the various coves. Depending on your preference, you can choose between the bays Sa Caleta, El Mago, or Platja del Rei. Leave Magaluf, follow the main road towards the water park and golf course, and after a few kilometers through pine forests, you'll reach the signposted coves. If you're coming in summer, it's best to arrive a bit earlier, as it can get busy here too.

Magaluf is like Balearic Island - not only party tourists can enjoy themselves here, but also those who love good food and don't want to just dive into fast food. Spanish cuisine offers a lot!

La Vieja Taberna: Fresh fish, seafood, paella, and tapas are available at the restaurant 'La Vieja Taberna'. Just check out the menu when you stroll along Avenida Olivera; there might be something for you.

The Olive Tree Mallorca: Great cocktails, appealing tapas platters, and a stunning sea view will surely impress you. Just stop by and treat yourself to a drink and a cozy dinner.

Zhero Boathouse: This beach club is a real highlight in Magaluf and should definitely be on your to-do list. Modern, with a nice, spacious terrace and a relaxed atmosphere, Zhero Boathouse invites you to enjoy cozy evenings. The prices for gazpacho, Caesar salad, and other delicacies are a bit steep, but it's worth it.

Magaluf can be quite wild, but some corners, especially the surrounding beaches and many great restaurants, can make a vacation here a highlight if you do it right. Don't be intimidated by the stories about drunk Brits because you can easily avoid them if you want. Better yet, see for yourself, and enjoy your holiday in Mallorca. Guru Tip: All-inclusive vacation in Spain.
