Where to Find the Lavender Fields?
You can find impressive lavender fields in various locations across Provence. Here are a few we would like to introduce:
- Plateau de Valensole: At an elevation of 500 meters, you will find the Plateau de Valensole. Especially, a visit from early July to early August is worthwhile, as the lavender flowers are particularly beautiful to see across the 800 km² area. Besides the breathtaking lavender fields, you can also find fields of wheat and sunflowers on the plateau.
- Sault in Vaucluse: Also in the municipality of Sault in the Vaucluse department, the kilometers of magnificent lavender fields stretch out. If you want to admire the fields, you can stroll along the four-kilometer circular path and learn about the different plant species and distillation processes from the signs along the way.
- Sénanque Abbey: Just as beautiful as the lavender fields is the purple sea of flowers in front of Sénanque Abbey. It is also located in the Vaucluse department. Together with the lavender flowers, it offers a magical sight and is therefore a popular photo motif.
Products Made from Lavender
However, those of you who think that lavender is only good for looking pretty and smelling wonderful are mistaken. This unique plant can now be found in various forms, such as honey, sachets, soaps, or even as a spice.
A small souvenir is almost obligatory if you ask us. True lavender connoisseurs also ascribe a positive and healing effect to the plant. In Provence, lavandin, a special hybrid variety of lavender, is cultivated and processed into fragrant essential lavender oil. Many also love to bring a piece of Provence home with them by using lavender as decoration in their gardens or on their balconies. It not only looks wonderful but also smells great!
For those who want to learn more about this plant, a visit to the Musée de la Lavande, located in the charming town of Coustellet, in the heart of the regional natural park Luberon, is recommended. Here you can discover the history, effects, and qualities of lavender.
