Why Kyushu is a Must for Japan Lovers
Kyushu is home to powerful volcanoes, idyllic landscapes, traditional temples, and hot springs, as well as Nagasaki - a city with a moving history. Join us on a Japanese island filled with unforgettable adventures!
Are you looking for a truly extraordinary travel destination? Japan has many hidden gems, such as the beautiful island of Kyushu, which I would like to introduce to you today. If the name doesn't ring a bell, you're not alone; Kyushu is still a true insider tip! I took a closer look at Japan's southernmost island and was so excited that I want to share my best tips for Kyushu with you. Beautiful nature and unique sights await you, that's for sure.
The Best Tips for a Vacation in Kyushu
Onsen and Ryokans | Usa, a small town | Temples
Nagasaki, a big city | Volcanoes of Kyushu | Mount Aso
Aoshima Island | Yakushima Island | Travel to Japan
Onsen and Ryokans
In the northeast of Kyushu, you will find Beppu, a large city known primarily for its hot springs. With over 3,700 hot springs, Beppu is a true paradise for bath enthusiasts from around the world.
Dive into Japanese history
A visit to a traditional onsen, which is the name for the hot baths in Japan, is something you can hardly avoid. Often, accommodations even offer small, private baths, allowing you to step directly from your room into the warm water and relax in peace. These accommodations are called ryokans, which immerse you in the traditional charm of Japanese history from the 8th century.
Nature Meets Culture in Usa
If you head northwest from Beppu or Oita into the countryside, you will come across the small town of Usa. Its fame is thanks to a very special sight: the Usajingu Shrine, also known as the Usa Shrine. Established in the 8th century, this structure is considered one of the oldest and most important Hachiman shrines in all of Japan. Walk through the grounds, admire the typical red buildings, cross small wooden bridges over pretty ponds, and delve deep into Japanese culture. If you're looking for a breath of fresh air, be sure to visit the Higashi Shiya Falls, which you can reach via a rather adventurous, small path.
Historic Temples and Buildings
Whether you're already a true fan of Japan or are visiting this fascinating country for the first time, the religion and culture will surely captivate you. Both are reflected in the architecture. On Kyushu, you will find some incredibly impressive buildings. One of them is the Buddhist Fuki-ji Temple north of Oita, which is especially surrounded by the brightest colors in autumn. Proudly, it is 1,300 years old, making it the oldest wooden temple on the island. On the other hand, the Komyozen-ji Temple near Fukuoka in northern Kyushu awaits you with idyllic stone and Zen gardens.
Nagasaki - a City with History
You probably know Nagasaki more for a very tragic event. In 1945, the second atomic bomb was dropped here, which completely destroyed a large part of the city and cost many lives. Since then, the city has been rebuilt, resulting in a vibrant port city. If you're still interested in the dark history of the city, you can visit the Atomic Bomb Museum or the touching Nagasaki Peace Memorial Hall.
The Beautiful Side of Nagasaki
For a wonderful view of the city, you can either hike up Mount Inasa or take a ride on the Nagasaki Ropeway. You will also have a beautiful view from the European-style Glover Gardens. Additionally, you can discover several historic temples in the city. Especially in the summer, the coastline lures you in for a relaxing beach day away from the hustle and bustle of the city, like at Takahama Beach.
True Highlights: Volcanoes of Kyushu
Nothing shapes the landscape of the Japanese islands like the majestic volcanoes, and you will find several on Kyushu. One of the most active volcanoes in Japan is Sakurajima, which rises like an island from Kagoshima Bay in southern Kyushu. Even on the ferry to the volcano, you'll enjoy a unique view, and you can book whole tours as well. Alternatively, you can explore the area on your own or rent bicycles. The barren yet spectacular landscape of Mount Aso, another volcano on Kyushu, is also truly impressive. Depending on the volcano's activity, you may even be able to take tours to the crater.
Close to Nature in Aso
If you're already in Aso, you can also plan for more time in this unique region. Nature lovers will be thrilled as you stroll through the beautiful Kusasenri prairie.
Lush green meadows or enchanting snowy landscapes
While you are welcomed here in summer by lush green meadows where gentle goats and horses graze, the area often transforms into an enchanting snowy landscape in winter. Similarly expansive landscapes and magnificent views await you on extensive hikes to the Viewpoint Daikanbo. If you prefer colorful sights, the Kuju Flowerpark is the right destination for you, as endless carpets of flowers in all the colors of the rainbow stretch out here.
You should also not miss the picturesque Shirakawa Springs with their crystal-clear water and explore the Nabegataki Waterfall. Perhaps you can also paddle with a small boat through the unbelievably green Takachiho Gorge, located an hour south of Aso. If, after so many experiences in nature, you crave a bit more culture and architecture, you can visit the impressive Aso Shrine in the heart of the city. You will find this in a charmingly designed village where you can taste a variety of culinary specialties.
Beach Vibes in Aoshima
Did you think that you would stroll along palm-lined beachfront promenades in Kyushu? You can indeed do so on the east coast of the island in Aoshima near Miyazaki. On the seemingly endless white sand beach, you will see cool surfers riding the waves during the summer, while the overall vibe of the area is super relaxed. Many Japanese and young people come here to spend their vacations conveniently. A long pier takes you to the small island of Aoshima, which is particularly known for its quirky rock formations referred to as the 'Devil's Washboard.' In the center of the island, you can visit the historic Aoshima Shrine.
UNESCO World Heritage Island Yakushima
My last tip takes you off the coast of Kyushu to the island of Yakushima. This island is one of the Osumi Islands and is located about 60 kilometers off the southern tip of Kyushu in the East China Sea.
Wander through the deep green jungle
Yakushima is particularly popular among travelers for its unspoiled wilderness and the Yakusugiland National Park, which covers almost half of the island and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you can wander through the depths of the lush green rainforest and stumble upon hidden gems like the Sempiro Waterfall. You can also get up close to the fascinating underwater world of the Pacific during unforgettable diving experiences.
Ready for the Island?
Be honest, did you have any idea how beautiful and diverse Kyushu is? You should embark on this unique adventure and see the island with your own eyes. I am sure that you will never forget the impressions of the dreamy landscape and that the incomparable Japanese culture will also win your heart. Be sure to allow enough time to get to know and love all the facets of Kyushu.
