Hidden Bays, Wellness & Plenty of Authenticity
The Thai island of Koh Phangan lures with stunning beaches, a dense jungle with roaring waterfalls, and plenty of authenticity. Read here what you must not miss during your vacation.
Koh Phangan's Beauty
Koh Phangan, the beautiful island of Thailand, long stood in the shadow of its neighboring island Koh Samui and is well-known for the Full Moon Party held here. But hold on! Koh Phangan is much more than that! On this island in the Gulf of Thailand, you'll find paradise bays and wild jungle landscapes where stunning waterfalls hide. With our tips, you'll experience all the highlights of Koh Phangan, discover hidden bays, and learn where you can indulge in delicious food, cool drinks, and a bit of wellness.
Getting There - How to Reach Koh Phangan?
Since Koh Phangan, unlike its neighboring island Samui, has no airport of its own, you can best reach the island by the regularly operating ferries. You can choose between a speed ferry from Lomprayah and a regular ferry. Tickets for the crossings can be purchased on-site or in advance online.
Guru Tip: From Koh Samui, you can easily take the Thong Nai Pan Express to Koh Phangan. This also stops at smaller bays and beaches.
You can also easily reach Koh Phangan from Chumphon, a province on the Thai mainland, by ferry. On the trip, you can enjoy your first highlight, as you pass through the picturesque landscape of Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park. Here, 42 small islands, covered with thick greenery, are scattered in the sea, creating a unique contrast with the vibrant blue shades. Can you imagine a better welcome? The best travel time to visit Koh Phangan is from March to October. The monsoon season lasts from about November to January. In our travel calendar, you can learn more about the best travel time for Thailand.
Beaches on Koh Phangan
The best way to explore the secluded beaches of Koh Phangan is to rent a scooter or car and go on your own adventure. But beware! We really only recommend using two-wheelers to experienced riders, as the road conditions and driving habits of the Thais require great caution. Alternatively, you can take (shared) taxis or a tuk-tuk to the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan, which we will introduce to you now.
Thong Nai Pan Bay
In the northeast of Koh Phangan awaits one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island. The charming village of Thong Nai Pan features two bays, Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai, beautifully nestled in a hilly jungle landscape. Above the village, you'll find our favorite spot to end relaxing beach days with an ice-cold drink: Most vacationers stay on the beach - all the better for you, allowing you to fully enjoy the breathtaking view of Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach.
Sit back comfortably on the cushioned seats and enjoy the panoramic view over the bay. It's best to stay until sunset, as the sky then shines in the most beautiful shades of red.
By Longtail Boat to Bottle Beach
Further north on Koh Phangan lies Bottle Beach. You can best reach it by taking one of the traditional longtail boats from Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach. Just talk to one of the Thai boatmen, and they'll swiftly take you to this beautiful spot for just a few Baht. Once you arrive at the beach, the turquoise water invites you to dive right in. There are also a handful of accommodations at the beach. Why not treat yourself to a room with a view of the beach and stay overnight!
Haad Yao Beach
This beach in the northwest of Koh Phangan may no longer be a hidden gem, but with its white, powdery sand and calm waters, it is still one of the most beautiful on the island.
Near the beach, you'll find small guesthouses, resorts, restaurants, and bars that offer everything you need to feel happy.
Haad Son Beach & Haad Chao Phao Beach
In the west of Koh Phangan, you'll find numerous beach paradises, often just a few hundred meters apart.
Guru Tip: Are you in the mood for a round of yoga on the beach? The Ananda Yoga Center in the west offers classes and private sessions.
During our vacations, we particularly loved the beaches Haad Son and Haad Chao Phao, as both beaches remain very authentic and not overcrowded. Nevertheless, nearby you'll find some bars and accommodations where you can stay for a little money. If you're looking for a restaurant to end your beach day, we recommend the Organic Love Wholefood Kitchen, Taboon, and Seed To Feed - Salad Bar. Here you can expect delicious and healthy dishes from Thai and international cuisines.
