Cinque Terre - translated from Italian as 'five villages' - is about a twelve-kilometer stretch of coastline along the Italian Riviera. As the name suggests, the Cinque Terre consists of five small colorful villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, all located on the steeply dropping coast. They are situated in the Liguria region in Northwestern Italy. A part of the city of La Spezia, which marks the eastern end of the coast, also falls under the area of the Cinque Terre, which is designated as a national park and is even protected. For over 20 years, the Cinque Terre has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage. All five villages attract visitors with their colorful facades, numerous small fishing boats, and chic streets and hiking trails that invite you to experience something very special on your vacation. The Italian village on the Ligurian coast is home to approximately 1,500 residents, making it the largest of the Cinque Terre and thus part of the national park. Monterosso stretches over 1.5 kilometers and is divided into two parts. The old town and the newer Fegina district are separated by a rock that juts out into the sea. On the rock lies the watchtower Torre Aurora, and a pedestrian tunnel about 100 meters long runs through it. A highlight of the village is the Gigante, a stone figure carved from the rock that once held a dance terrace. Unfortunately, it was partially damaged during a storm in 1966.

Travel Tip: You can enjoy particularly good food and drinks at Ristorante Miky - here you'll receive excellent service and incredibly delicious food!

Vernazza has just around 900 residents and is considered the most beautiful of all the villages in the Cinque Terre. It is one of the few remaining fishing villages along the Italian coast. Vernazza features a small peninsula around the harbor basin and many beautiful, ancient castle towers. The village is seen as a symbol of the fascinating beauty of the Cinque Terre, especially since Vernazza has best preserved its elegant appearance and characteristics. The defensive fortress Castello Doria, which offers a perfect view over Vernazza, is especially worth seeing. If you get hungry, it's best to go to Belforte and enjoy delicious food while taking in a lovely view.

Corniglia is the only one of the five villages that does not lie directly by the sea but is perched on a mountain spur at an elevation of 100 meters. With 250 residents, it is the smallest village and is located roughly in the middle of the Cinque Terre. Thanks to its high position, you have a wonderful view of the other four villages on either side. The small village is known for its wine cultivation on the steep slopes. Even in winter, the trees bear oranges and lemons, adding color to the life of the Cinque Terre alongside the vibrant house facades. In the center of Corniglia, you can take a break at Caffè Matteo.

Manarola is the oldest of the Cinque Terre. The foundation stone of the San Lorenzo church dates back to the year 1160. Following Corniglia, it is the second smallest village with about 450 residents. The people here primarily make their living from fishing and wine cultivation. Manarola is famous for the legendary Via dell'Amore, or the Lover's Path, which leads to Riomaggiore and connects the two villages. This path is so named because it offers a magical view of nature, and many love locks can be found along the way. It's especially suitable for all of you in love, but everyone else can enjoy this view too. Keep in mind that parts of this path may be closed off, which unfortunately happens from time to time. After a stroll, you'll find an excellent kitchen waiting for you at Trattoria Dal Billy that will satisfy your hunger.

Bustling Riomaggiore

Above the harbor bay of Riomaggiore, the colorful houses rise and cling to the steep slope of the coast. Surrounded by the small colorful houses is the church of San Giovanni Battista, which was built in 1340 and later acquired a Gothic style in 1820. Inside the church, there are three central aisles separated by pointed arches. The vibrant life of the town and its residents primarily unfolds along the ascending road. Here you will find restaurants, cafés, and shops. A highly recommendable restaurant is Enoteca Dau Cila, where you can enjoy a great view directly over the sea.
