Barcelona restaurant, top 30 best gastronomic places

Forget the three kilometres of golden sandy beaches and Gaudí's splendid architecture: the first reason to visit Barcelona is the food served in every restaurant.

And while the legacy of El Bulli still lives on among the city's great chefs (even despite the recent closure of Adrià's culinary empire, which includes legendary establishments like Tickets, Pakta and Enigma), there are so many brilliant dishes prepared by so many great chefs that it's an almost insurmountable challenge to discover them all (that's not to say you shouldn't try). Few cities in the world can match the Catalan capital for its gastronomic offerings, which range from world-class Michelin stars to modest tapas restaurants and everything in between.

It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. Compiling a list of the best restaurants in Barcelona involves a lot of research, and we're more than happy to survey the range of restaurants here, especially if it means hungry visitors can discover something new and exciting.

This list of 30 essential dining experiences is just the tip of the iceberg, but it offers a wide variety of food (and prices), from the stars of Catalan cuisine to the many tastes of Barcelona's growing international culinary scene.

Barcelona's must-try gourmet restaurants

Besta

Restaurants Besta BarceloneBesta is the brainchild of Catalan-born Carles Ramón and Galician-born Manu Núñez. Together, they have invented a unique gastronomic style: a blend of the best seasonal products from their respective regions. It is a perfect marriage and the result is simply ethereal. Ramón and Núñez try new recipes and take risks, especially when it comes to mixing unorthodox ingredients from the sea and the land. Surf 'n' turf is a mainstay of Spanish cuisine. Combinations such as chicken and shrimp or meatballs and squid abound on the menus here, but Besta goes even further, serving Galician oysters with thin slices of dry-aged beef, for example.

Restaurants Mr Porter BarceloneTucked away inside the Sir Victor Hotel, Mr. Porter is everything you'd expect from its trendy address and has become a crowd pleaser. It may be billed as a steakhouse, but its wood-fired oven also serves superb vegetable and seafood dishes. Menu highlights include roasted whole leek, smooth beef carpaccio and succulent Japanese Wagyu steak, but the dish that will have you fighting for the last bite is the sweet-but-spicy jumbo prawn salad with corn and avocado.

It's the best steak in Barcelona and the menu is as customisable as you like: choose your type of beef, its weight and how you want it cooked, as well as optional sauces and sides. If you're overwhelmed by the choices, opt for the Beef Frison, cooked medium rare, with Café de Paris sauce, Dauphinoise potatoes and carrot rissoles with cumin on the side. Enoteca Paco Pérez

Restaurants Enoteca Paco Pérez BarceloneThe bright white dining room exudes sophistication. Everything is spotless, from the immaculate white tablecloths to the spacious table layout to the staff in their immaculate uniforms. Chef Paco Pérez is an El Bulli alumnus who has broken away from Adrià's world and earned six Michelin stars of his own. His aforementioned love of 'mar i muntanya' (surf 'n' turf in Catalan) is present in many of his dishes, which include decadent creations such as crayfish served with wild mushrooms and sea figs or perfectly balanced sea bass with wild mushrooms and mussels. To fully enjoy the Paco Pérez experience, the tasting menu is a must, although its €200 price tag is not for the faint of heart.

Restaurants Disfrutar BarceloneA meal at Disfrutar is like a show: there's fire, ice, smoke, and lots of flavour and colour. Three chefs from the late El Bulli create playful and unpredictable tasting menus that often surprise us by saying one thing to our eyes but sending a completely different message to our taste buds. Highlights include crispy egg yolk with mushrooms and chocolate peppers in oil and salt, but in this two-starred gem, everything is good. This restaurant is one of the best in the world !

Berbena

Restaurants Berbena BarceloneThe locals rule here. Few tourists have heard of Berbena, and even fewer venture off the beaten track into the city's chic neighbourhood above Avenida Diagonal. Inside, you'll find daily batches of homemade bread that smells like your grandmother's cooking, comfort food like beef stew and gooey slices of Spanish omelette, platters of locally sourced cheeses and charcuterie - all made to be shared. We like to think you'll stumble in here for a quick meal. You'll find a table by the window. One thing leads to another, and by midnight you'll realise you've spent hours snacking and chatting. And you won't regret a single second of it.

Cinc Sentits

Restaurant Cinc Sentits BarceloneThere are no bells and whistles at Cinc Sentits, but you couldn't blame Catalan-Canadian chef Jordi Artal if there were. After ten years as a marketing director in Silicon Valley, he not only taught himself to cook, but he earned a Michelin star in 2009. But Artal is not one to brag. He is kind, gentle and modest; he works alongside his sister; his mother sometimes helps him serve. Their restaurant, recently moved and refurbished in the Eixample, is appropriately sober, with simple wooden chairs, white walls and no fuss. You'll be fighting over the stars of the tasting menu with your dining companions, but trust us: The pan-fried scallop with a ham chip is top-notch.

Benzina

Restaurant Benzina BarceloneMost attendees are in this garage to settle in and enjoy comforting, no-frills Italian food. Treat appetizers like tapas: Mix juicy bites of buffalo mozzarella and tomato with rich bites of aubergine alla parmigiana served with Parmesan ice cream. For the main courses, it's all about the carbs: linguine with garlic, oil and lobster; perfectly balanced dishes of risotto and gnocchi; and even an old-fashioned carbonara, all gooey and sticky. Can Fisher

Restaurant Can Fisher BarceloneTourists are inevitable at a seaside paella restaurant like this one, overlooking Bogatell beach, but what sets Can Fisher apart is the high proportion of locals, giving it Barcelona credibility. Fish dishes come in all shapes and sizes, from delectable red shrimp carpaccio to freshly shucked oysters, anchovies dripping with olive oil, steamed mussels and fresh salt-baked turbot. But again, the real highlight here is the wide range of paellas. From the goosebump-inducing lobster rice soup to the Arroz del Señorito, specially designed for young people who prefer not to get their hands dirty, to the black squid rice with small squid, padrón peppers and alioli, the selection is so good it's almost impossible to choose just one.

Slow & Low

Restaurant Slow & Low BarceloneAt Slow & Low, everyone rushes to the six stools at the kitchen counter, which are placed at the same height as the chefs - a metaphor, perhaps, for the restaurant's ethos: to take in everything that we traditionally associate with tasting menus. Dinner will be full of risk, mouth-watering flavours and beautiful raw materials.

Estimar

Restaurant Estimar BarceloneIf you're a fan of all things fish, look no further than Estimar, hidden in one of the smaller streets in Barcelona's El Born district. The prawn carpaccio is a star dish, as are the razor clams, grilled Cap de Creus prawns and whole grilled sole. Portions are small but expensive, so be prepared to order generously and pay accordingly.

Parking Pizza

Restaurant Parking Pizza BarceloneThe name Parking Pizza doesn't lie: yes, it's a car park. And apart from a giant pizza oven giving off the aroma of dough in the back left corner, little has changed from its previous incarnation. On the concrete floor, still outlined by the white paint of the car parks, are large communal tables and cardboard seats with removable lids to store your stuff. It's hip, it's hipster, it's crowded and it's the best pizza in Barcelona (is it as good as a slice of New York pizza? You decide). Of the 13 choices on the menu, number 11 is the signature: a circle of gooey joy without cheese or tomato, with Fior di Latte mozzarella, fontina, parmesan, egg and truffle.

Ca l'Estevet

Restaurant Ca l'Estevet BarceloneBack in the day (a very long time - the restaurant opened in the 19th century), this El Raval restaurant was a favourite haunt of Barcelona's artistic community, and the old-fashioned bohemian decor has been well preserved: bad lighting, white tablecloths on dark wood, and walls adorned with old portraits and mosaics. The change is more of the same, but better.

Pellicer has more space, an oak grill and a wok fire. Dive into his experiments with the new facility, like the incredible cauliflower steak with massala spices. Yakumanka by Gastón Acurio

Restaurant Yakumanka by Gastón Acurio BarceloneWith its casual dining room and hand-painted panels on the walls, Yakumanka looks more like a casual beach restaurant than a serious dining destination, but make no mistake, it is one (a fact your wallet will surely become aware of by the end).

This restaurant is the work of Gastón Acurio, the father of modern Peruvian cuisine. The dishes are, as you'd expect, authentically Peruvian and make a real impact, from classic ceviche (of course), with tiger's milk, or leche de tigre, lots of coriander and just the right level of spice, to tiraditos of sliced tuna, green mango and crunchy quinoa, not to mention all the fresh fish and seafood options of the day behind the well-stocked counter.

Suculent

Restaurant Suculent BarceloneFrom the outside, Suculent may not look like a temple of gastronomy, but the interior is rustic-chic, with wooden tables and wicker chairs. His dishes are unconventional, creative and utterly decadent, so leave your diet at the door and prepare to indulge your inner foodie. Àbac

Restaurant Àbac BarceloneLocated in a small boutique hotel on the outskirts of Barcelona, Àbac is run by Jordi Cruz, an immensely talented chef who won his first Michelin star when he was just 24. He did it again when Àbac received its third star from the Michelin inspectors. When it comes to the main event (and let's face it, the food is why you're here), Àbac offers very little choice. There is only one tasting menu. It costs 265 euros. It must be served to the whole table. And you won't be disappointed.

Cruz takes you on a journey that starts with stunning appetisers like his 'Gilda de Mar', through marinated oyster with apple and mushrooms, grilled eel on brioche with 'all i oli' and fresh wasabi, grouse roasted with beetroot romesco, and countless other bites and plates, before finishing with a series of decadent desserts, such as his frosted "tuile" with flowers, yoghurt textures, crumbled biscuit and violet ice cream.

Fismuler

Restaurant Fismuler BarceloneFismuler Barcelona is the much-loved result of the professional passion and friendship of three chefs. Nino Redruello, Patxi Zumárraga and Jaime Santianes met in the kitchen of the legendary El Bulli in 2002 and, although their careers took them down different paths, they ended up at Fismuler.

The restaurant is sleek and modern, with exposed brick, bare wood and stone tiles blurring the line between the city street outside and the interior of the dining room, separated only by a huge glass wall. The cuisine has obvious Spanish roots, but also strays north and west, with Provençal pate and black truffle burrata. Dishes such as the ortiguilla (sea anemone) omelette and the delicate semi-cooked sea bream with raisins and almonds are superb modern interpretations of Spanish classics, and the service is as informal as possible to avoid pretense while still offering a refined dining experience.

So it goes without saying that the cuisine at this restaurant is going to be out of this world. You can choose between a tasting menu or an à la carte menu. CruiX

Restaurant CruiX BarceloneThis hidden gastronomic gem attracts food lovers who don't want to spend a hundred euros or more on a Michelin-starred meal. Direkte Boqueria

Restaurant Direkte Boqueria BarceloneAny food lover worth their salt knows that Direkte Boqueria, an unpretentious old market stall, is a must-visit on a trip to Barcelona. Reservations disappear so quickly it makes your head spin. The formula is simple: two tasting menus, nine courses for 60 euros, or 12 for 75 euros.

And it doesn't take long to appreciate why chef Arnau Muñío was named Chef of the Year 2018 at the prestigious Girona Gastronomic Forum. His style is Catalan-Asian fusion, and there's no doubt about it when the delicately balanced umami of the oyster gyoza dumpling with its "capipota" sauce explodes in your mouth (capipota translates as "head and hoof" and refers to a rustic Catalan stew made from veal head and shanks). But the real showstopper is the ultra gooey matcha cheesecake.
