Finnish Lapland
The Perfect Destination for Every Season
Finnish Lapland is one of those regions that will enchant you with its mix of tranquility and stunning nature. Whether in summer or winter, here you will experience moments you will never forget in your life.
Lapland is the land of endless dreams, where you can enjoy wonderful winter and summer moments. It is a paradise for all winter sports enthusiasts and also for those who want to be enchanted by the magic of the midnight sun in the summer. We will now tell you how to get to Lapland in Finland, where to find dream accommodations, and what you can see and experience while you are there.
Traveling to Lapland
Getting to the north of Finland is now much simpler than it was a few years ago, and the breathtaking landscape makes the approximately three-hour flight well worth it. However, there are many ways to get to Lapland: flying is always the fastest option. You can now fly directly to your dream destination, Finnish Lapland, without any layovers in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Currently, Lufthansa offers direct flights from Frankfurt to Ivalo. Other airports in Finnish Lapland are Kemi-Tornio and Rovaniemi, which are currently only accessible with a layover. Most often, you'll be flying with Finnair, the official airline of Santa Claus.
For your hotel or apartment, we definitely recommend renting a low-cost rental car that allows you to travel flexibly around the country. If you prefer to drive your own car, you should allow for a bit more time. A trip through Denmark and Sweden to Lapland or a ferry ride from the German coast to Finland is certainly a great alternative that will give you a special impression of the countries.
Guru Tip
If you're traveling to Lapland in winter, we have a special recommendation for you. With the Santa Claus Express, you can travel through the beautifully snow-covered landscapes of Lapland to the home of Santa Claus. Your adventure trip starts from Helsinki and can be booked from as little as 10€ per person. If you want to make it especially cozy, you can book your own sleeping cabin from 99€. It's best to reserve as early as possible, which is available up to 10 months in advance. You can find tickets and more information here.
Lapland in Winter
Lapland also offers a wide range of activities in winter, showcasing the Finnish winter wonderland at its finest.
Northern Lights in Lapland
Let's start with the most important event that you must see in Lapland - the Northern Lights! Everyone knows the incredibly fascinating, colorful illuminations that snake across the night sky in the north.
The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, usually appear in a bright green hue. However, red and violet lights are also visible, due to the various wavelengths of light. Anyone standing in the snow-covered expanse, watching this spectacle, will certainly never forget this experience. Nature is simply fascinating and continuously impresses us with its infinite beauty.
Sledding Through the Winter Wonderland
Let's talk about another image that likely comes to mind when you think of Lapland: sledding through the deep white snow! Whether with huskies or reindeer, this fantastic experience can become a reality for you in Lapland. Book a sledding tour with energetic dogs or the seemingly calm reindeer and glide through the beautiful winter landscape of Lapland. If you prefer less animals but still want to go fast, you have the option of experiencing a snowmobile ride and watch the landscape fly by. Be careful not to lift off and soar through the air like Santa Claus with his sleigh!
Winter Sports in the Snow Paradise
Once you've arrived in the winter paradise, you should definitely strap on some skis and hit the slopes. Ski and snowboard fans will be particularly thrilled in the ski resort of Levi, but snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also very popular in this region. In the deepest winter, when some lakes are completely frozen, this delights the Finns who grab their skates and twirl on the lake. Days can easily slip away quickly. If you want to feel like a true Finn, you should definitely try ice fishing and then retreat to a hot sauna. But beware: the obligatory jump into the icy lake is a must for Finns!
