What You Can Experience in Marmaris on the Turquoise Coast
Whether it's sunbathing on the beach, leisurely walks along the waterfront promenade, action and fun with thrilling canyoning, or sightseeing in Pamukkale - you definitely won't be bored here!
Today, I want to introduce you to a special gem on the Turquoise Coast: Marmaris, the charming harbor town in the southwest of the country. Unassumingly hidden behind a group of islands, this place and its diverse region have so much to offer. It's no wonder this tourist destination is so popular with travelers from all over the world. I'll share ten tips for experiences and excursion destinations in and around Marmaris that will make your vacation unforgettable.
Is traveling to Turkey safe?
It's no secret: due to the political situation in Turkey, opinions are divided. While some decide that traveling to Turkey is no longer an option, others refuse to give up their beloved Turkey vacations and still enjoy a relaxed time. Whether you want to take a trip or not is something you have to decide for yourself. As always, you should check the latest safety information with the Federal Foreign Office.
1. Indulge in relaxing beach days
Let me start with the main argument that continues to attract regular visitors to Turkey: Ideal weather with mild temperatures invites sun worshippers for a relaxed beach vacation all year round. Additionally, there are incredibly picturesque coastlines and countless beaches. A long city beach with a versatile water sports offer and a lovely view of the offshore islands can be found right along the promenade of Marmaris. If you want to discover more secluded dream beaches, it's best to rent a car or board an excursion boat to explore the diverse coast with its hidden coves.
2. Go Hiking
Have you lazed enough and want to actively explore the surroundings of Marmaris? Then lace up your hiking boots, pack enough drinks, and hit the trails.
Hiking reveals beautiful outlooks
Around the area, especially in Marmaris National Park, beautiful trails await you. Wander through cypress and pine forests, and keep your eyes peeled for wild goats, foxes, eagles, or other wildlife. Otherwise, you'll also enjoy splendid views of the picturesque coastlines, hidden coves, and the stunning turquoise sea.
3. Boat trip on the Dalyan
A bit further along the coast, you'll find the lovely resort of Dalyan. Small boats take you here from the idyllic Köyceğiz Lake, lazily cruising through the Dalyan River while passing beautiful landscapes. A special highlight are the Lycean rock tombs, some of which date back to the 4th century. Sit back, enjoy the view of the wonderfully turquoise water, and soak up some sun. Then treat yourself to a revitalizing mud bath before the tour guides bring you back to Marmaris.
Tip: At a sheltered beach near Dalyan, the offspring of the loggerhead turtle hatch. If you want to see them, you can visit the turtle breeding station.
4. Pamper Yourself in the Hamam
For me, every Turkey vacation definitely includes some wellness! There's no better way to unwind than in a traditional Hamam, while enveloped by soft music and fragrant steam. After a thorough relaxation in the Turkish steam bath, you can enjoy a nice scrub and choose from various massages, wraps, and other treatments. A Turkish tea perfectly rounds off your Hamam visit. A lovely side effect: After so much wellness, your skin is well-prepared for an even tan.
5. Go on a Canyoning Tour
I've already briefly mentioned Köyceğiz Lake, but it's not just leisurely boat tours that depart from here: If you like some action during your holiday, you can start an adventurous canyoning tour from here! Spend an unforgettable day in nature as you climb rocks, jump into crystal-clear pools of water, or rappel down waterfalls. With a good dose of adrenaline and plenty of action, you can push your limits and reflect on an eventful day in the evening. Additionally, you'll experience the stunning gorges of the surrounding area up close.
Tip: An exciting alternative on the Dalaman River would be a thrilling rafting tour, where you and your team paddle through rapid waters in an inflatable boat.
6. Excursion to Pamukkale & Hierapolis
A very special highlight of the region is hidden a bit further away, northeast of Marmaris: Pamukkale. Surely you've heard of the famous travertine terraces. The sight of the snowy white pools is simply enchanting, and the calcium-rich thermal water is said to have healing properties. For the protection of the sensitive basins, swimming is only permitted in specially designated pools.
Follow in the Footsteps of Antiquity
Also, when you're already in Pamukkale, you should definitely check out the ancient city of Hierapolis. From the stone steps of the massive amphitheater, you have a breathtaking view. You can literally dive into history at Cleopatra's Pool. In the crystal-clear basin, you'll float next to ancient ruins and columns from long-gone times. Cleopatra's Pool was created in the 7th century when an earthquake shook the city and has attracted numerous visitors ever since.
7. Go Diving
Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned diver, the vibrant underwater world off the coast of Marmaris will surely enchant you. Of course, you can also do some snorkeling in the shallows with your own mask, but to get to the best dive spots, you'll need a boat. During full-day dive trips, you'll learn the art of diving and see the most beautiful reefs and the most colorful fish. An unforgettable experience!
8. Savor Turkish Cuisine
Another irresistible argument for many travelers is the one-of-a-kind Turkish cuisine: From classics like dürüm, pide, kebab, and lahmacun, you'll find everything your heart desires in Marmaris.
Enjoy a generous meze
The best way to appreciate Turkish cuisine is through an extensive meze. Enjoy the tastiest appetizers, salads, and spicy dips served with puff pastry rolls and flatbread. As a tourist spot, Marmaris offers countless restaurants for you. Particularly popular are the Karen Brasserie or the beautiful Mia Marmaris, where you'll be served fresh seafood right by the harbor. Don't forget to indulge in sweet baklava for dessert. Bon Appetit!
9. Visit the Harbor of Marmaris
Since we are already discussing the harbor, let's stay on the topic, because it's really beautiful here! Various boats, from traditional wooden ships to sailboats and luxury yachts, are docked in the harbor basin. Stroll along the beach promenade and pier while enjoying the sea breeze; there's even a tiny lighthouse. When hunger strikes, inviting restaurants await you along the promenade. From the harbor, you can embark on numerous excursions to the surrounding coasts and islands, such as the Datca Peninsula, to discover new places.
10. Take a Trip to Rhodes
Fancy a visit to Rhodes? Why not, as the Greek island is just around the corner. In just 45 minutes, a catamaran can take you to Rhodes, where you can swim at beautiful dream beaches, visit UNESCO World Heritage old towns, shop extensively, and of course indulge in Greek tavern cuisine. Who would have thought that you could get to your Greece vacation this way!
