The Green Oasis in Northern Thailand
Due to the scenic beauty along the Ping River, surrounded by tropical forests, Chiang Mai is often referred to as the 'Rose of the North.' Travelers looking to experience both action and culture on their vacation should follow me to the green north of the kingdom. Let yourself be enchanted by Buddhist temples and breathtaking landscapes in Chiang Mai!
When thinking of a vacation in Thailand, most travelers likely first envision the paradise beaches in the south of the country. However, Thailand has much more to offer. In northern Thailand, you can expect a vacation destination that will make the hearts of all adventure seekers and enthusiasts skip a beat. Therefore, today I want to take you, off the beaten path, to the picturesque Chiang Mai.
Insider Tips for Your Stay in Chiang Mai
Temple Quest
To get your first impression of the city, I recommend starting your exploration in the charming old town. Countless temples await discovery in Chiang Mai. No two are alike, allowing you to admire various chedis and Buddhas in the nearly 200 temple complexes. Watch the monks during their solemn ceremonies and escape the bustle of the lively metropolis-an incredibly peaceful and even magical atmosphere awaits you. The best part: you can visit most temples for free!
Temples You Shouldn't Miss
Depending on how much time you have, you can visit a variety of temples at your leisure. One of my favorites is definitely Wat Chedi Luang, one of the largest complexes in the heart of the old town. The gigantic chedi, adorned with stone elephants, is sure to enchant you. A true golden treasure awaits you at Wat Phra Singh. Additionally, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is rightly one of the most popular temples. Although it is a bit outside the city, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view!
Chiang Mai's Legendary Night Markets
After a day full of exciting cultural experiences, it's time to relax by strolling through a night market. The traditional night market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 PM to midnight, inviting visitors to browse. In addition to the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs for those back home as well as affordable clothing, the visit to the Chiang Mai night market is mainly worthwhile for sampling the abundant food options. For the brave among you, there's even a chance to try a real Thai specialty-fried insects!
Cooking Schools in Chiang Mai
If you want to enjoy Thai cuisine at home, then I have a special tip for you. Chiang Mai is not only known for its temples and natural beauty but also for its cooking schools, where locals teach you the art of authentic curry and Pad Thai preparation. I promise that by the end of the day, even the biggest cooking novice will be able to whip up a fantastic Thai menu.
Take the opportunity to get to know the stunning countryside of Chiang Mai by booking a cooking class in the lush surroundings. The eventful day begins with a visit to the local farmers' market, where you will gather fresh ingredients. Your guide will share insider knowledge about the best ingredients during the tour.
Once you've bought all your fresh ingredients, you'll head to the mountains. There, you'll prepare the delicacies not in a regular kitchen, but with a unique view, surrounded by fruit and vegetable gardens.
Cooking in a breathtaking setting
At the sight of the breathtaking mountain backdrop of northern Thailand, I was breathless. When putting together your menu, you can choose from various dishes: You might start with refreshing spring rolls, enjoy aromatic curries as the main dish, and end the day with creamy coconut rice topped with mango. My conclusion of the day: Who would have thought that making fresh curry paste could lead to sore muscles in the arms? But the effort is worth it. The flavors created from the fresh ingredients are unique!
The Tastiest Restaurants
Of course, the culinary delights of Thailand can also be enjoyed in one of the many warungs or in the excellent restaurants. Particularly popular for typical salads, rice, and noodle dishes is the Tikky Cafe, while David's Kitchen serves true gourmet cuisine. For affordable, healthy, and vegetarian options, head to Freshtime. Otherwise, strolling through one of the markets is always worthwhile, where you can sample the most extraordinary delicacies at the many street food stalls.
Where the Big Elephants Roam...
Like temples and good food, elephants are also part of Thailand. But as you may already know, particularly in tourism, elephants often face mistreatment: whether for shows, elephant riding, or labor-the sensitive giants suffer tremendously from the stress.
A touching experience!
In Chiang Mai, however, you can find the Elephant Nature Park, a highly recommended elephant park where rescued elephants are rehabilitated. You can feed the animals during your visit, pet them, and play with them in the mud. You'll be closer to these gentle giants than ever before. It's truly a touching experience that you'll remember forever!
Chiang Mai Grand Canyon
Yes, you read that correctly. Not only in the USA but also in Thailand can you marvel at a Grand Canyon. Chiang Mai has plenty to offer for daring adventure lovers. The natural spectacle, which you can easily reach by scooter in just 20 minutes from the city center, not only provides cool relief but will also elevate your adrenaline levels. An old quarry has created the spectacular cliff from which you can daringly plunge into the cool water. Fun is guaranteed for every level of adventure, as you can leap into the emerald-green water from heights of five, ten, or even sixteen meters-it's incredibly exciting!
The Magical Festival of Lights
Perhaps you have already heard of the legendary festival of lights in Thailand, which annually brings the entire country to a celebratory mood between late October and late November.
Countless lights illuminate the night sky
Temples such as Wat Lok Mo Li are particularly beautifully decorated during this time and illuminated with countless colorful lanterns. In Chiang Mai, the Festival of Lights is known as Yi Peng and is celebrated for three full days. Watch as countless lanterns float into the sky in a magical ceremony, illuminating the night with a unique enchantment. Simply unforgettable!
Guru Tip: This year's Festival of Lights in Chiang Mai will take place from November 5 to 6, 2025.
