Tips: Packing Your Carry-On Correctly

If you're planning a city trip and will be away for just two or three nights, carry-on luggage is usually more than enough. It's best to lay out different outfits that you'd like to wear during your trip and opt for neutral clothing items that you can mix and match easily. Heavy items like jackets, shoes, sweaters, and thick jeans should ideally be worn on the flight to save space in your carry-on. If you want to save even more space, you can also use the layering technique and wear multiple layers (up to a point).

Electronics like laptops, smartphones, power banks, and straighteners, as well as all liquids, need to be removed from carry-on luggage at the airport security check and screened separately. So pack your carry-on in such a way that liquids and electronics are easily accessible during the airport check-in.

Important Tips for Liquids in Carry-On Luggage

  • Liquids must be transported in a transparent and resealable bag. A maximum of 10 containers, each not exceeding 100 ml, may be carried.
  • You can get such bags at any regular drugstore in the form of freezer bags or specialized travel bags.
  • Liquids that can be brought on board in the above-described manner include, according to the Interior Ministry: 'Aerosols, gels, pastes, lotions, foams, creams, gels, mixtures of liquids and solids, and other items of similar consistency.'
  • Medications and baby food may also be carried in the carry-on.
  • Have you ever wondered what food is allowed on the plane? I have the surprising answer for you!
  • Many toiletry items are available in travel size, or - which is more cost-effective - can be refilled into reusable travel-sized containers which are available at any drugstore.
  • The standard disposable razor with a blade length of 6 cm is also allowed in carry-on luggage.
  • In my travel magazine, you'll find more about airport security checks and how to navigate them without issues.
