Auckland in New Zealand

New Zealand is truly a gem for travelers and adventurers, and this has been known for quite some time. Today, I would like to introduce you to the city of Auckland in the northern part of the island, which will be easily accessible with new connections starting in February thanks to Qatar Airways.

'City of Sails', 'A young beauty with 100 lovers'; just like its varied nicknames, the city itself is diverse and multifaceted. Its pristine reputation is owed to its multicultural atmosphere, which allows you to discover something new around every corner and welcomes you with open arms. Take a look at my Auckland tips and get an overview of what the city has to offer.

What You Should Know About Auckland

  • Auckland is located on the North Island of New Zealand and is home to one-third of the country's entire population, making it the largest urban area in the country.
  • Essentially, the city is built upon 50 volcanoes, which shape the landscape accordingly. But don't worry, all the volcanoes are inactive.
  • The Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, gave the city its nickname 'A young beauty with 100 lovers'. They were also the ones who settled Auckland in 1350 and established communities on the aforementioned volcanoes.
  • Due to Auckland's location on protected harbors, the city is particularly a dream destination for sailors. It's no surprise that the city earned the nickname 'City of Sails'!
  • Auckland could also be described as a multicultural mosaic, as it's rare to find so many different cultures blending together so wonderfully in one city. Over 50% have European roots, 23% are Asian, 14% are Pacific Islanders, and 11% have Māori ancestry. No one here can truly complain about a lack of diversity.
  • According to a study, Auckland has the third highest quality of life in the world. To all the explorers and emigrants among you: What are you waiting for?

First Impressions: Settling in Auckland

Depending on where you are departing from, your flight time can take up to 30 hours. Thus, the infamous jet lag is almost guaranteed. If you don't want to start your precious and often numbered vacation days with immediate recovery in your hotel room after such a long time in the air, I have a few easy excursion ideas in and around Auckland that won't be too demanding but will give you a great first impression of the city.

The City Circuit Bus runs from 8 AM to 6 PM every 10 minutes through the heart of Auckland, taking you clockwise around the vibrant downtown. And the best part: This great city tour won't cost you a dime, as it is completely free. If you've rented a car or wish to relax during a ferry ride (about $10), I recommend a trip to the former fishing village of Devonport.

I hope you packed your swimwear or stowed it in the car because here you'll find one of Auckland's most popular beaches. The unique aspect here is: instead of burying your stressed body in white sand, you'll be lying on black sand. If you're not ready for a long drive right after your arrival, Auckland itself also offers some peaceful oases; numerous parks invite you to kick back and relax.

In Cornwall Park, you'll already get a taste of the aforementioned 'multicultural mosaic': Inspired by British influences, you can picnic on sprawling, lush lawns in harmony with nature and the charming company of grazing sheep.

Sightseeing in Auckland

The city is incredibly diverse. Be sure to take the time to stroll through the city and discover many of its different attractions.

Sky Tower

Of course, notable destinations shouldn't be missed in my Auckland tips! What characterizes the so-called Sky Tower, you might already know from the CN Tower in Toronto: Those without a fear of heights can ride up to 182 meters and walk on a glass floor, or be whisked up to 220 meters and enter an observation deck under the open sky. For the adventurous and adrenaline junkies, the Sky Tower has even more surprises in store. If you're looking for a very specific thrill, the Skyjump is the right choice for you. Attached to a computer-controlled cable that slows you down, you'll plunge towards the ground at a maximum speed of 85 km/h.

Mount Eden

Earlier, I mentioned the volcanoes upon which Auckland sits. Mount Eden is perhaps the most beautiful natural elevation in Auckland, and the moderate hike to the top will be rewarding for each of you. On the southern slope of the green giant, you'll find terraces, green steps on the slope that, as the name suggests, look like terraces or balconies. At the summit of Mount Eden, there is another highlight: a 50-meter-deep, also green crater. Caution is advised, as slipping once means a difficult climb back up. From the top, you also have a spectacular view of Auckland and its surroundings; particularly beautiful if you find yourself here in the evening at dusk. History and culture enthusiasts, I've got a good tip for you as well.

Auckland Memorial Museum

The Auckland War Memorial Museum does not exclusively focus, as you might assume, on New Zealand's war history, but rather showcases interesting and unique artifacts from the Māori era. You can feel almost like a real Māori when you enter the so-called Hotunui, a traditional meeting house. The museum also displays significant artworks, exhibits natural history collections, and serves as the city's central war memorial.

Auckland's beautiful nature and its prominent location invite you to explore the nearby surroundings. Especially the offshore islands are ideal destinations for a day trip. On Rangitoto Island, New Zealand's youngest volcano, just a short distance from Auckland's city center and emerging from the sea only 600 years ago, you'll find a true paradise for relaxation.

Both manageable and extensive hiking trails invite you to explore the local flora and fauna. Along the way, be sure to check out the lava tunnels and caves, as they are a true highlight on the island. If you hike to the summit of the volcano, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of Auckland and its surroundings. Swimmers and divers can also fully enjoy themselves here, but be aware that there is no lifeguard on the beaches and always use a visible dive flag when diving. Safety first!

Birdwatchers and those who can't get enough of flora and fauna should book a day trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island. For many years, the island consisted only of grassland until 1984 when thousands of native trees were replanted, restoring the island as a habitat for rare and endangered bird species. Today, the island is a freely accessible nature reserve. A trip here isn't cheap, but the funds are used to maintain the nature reserve. A holiday without a beach isn't a holiday for you? Well, I've also found some commendable beaches for you! Since New Zealand is famous for its black sand beaches, you should head to Piha Beach.

Your Trip to Auckland

The black sand hugs rocky cliffs and small forests. Its location also makes it a hotspot for surfers, who find not only great waves but also ideal wind conditions. Hikers will also be satisfied when they encounter majestic waterfalls in the adjacent forests. If you prefer to walk on white sand and bury your toes in fine sand, I have two tips for you:

Orewa Beach is only about 20 minutes north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and is particularly attractive for families with children, as safe swimming is guaranteed there and numerous water activities beckon. Early risers among you shouldn't miss the stunning sunrise at this beach. Do you love azure water and fine sandy beaches but can do without amenities like bars, restaurants, and rental stations? Then Omaha Beach is perfect for you.

So how about it, travelers? Has Auckland itself and my Auckland tips convinced you to embark on a trip to New Zealand's North Island, even if it means a travel time of over 20 hours? Trust me, your efforts will be rewarded! Especially when you stand atop one of the many volcanic peaks, with Auckland lying directly at your feet, or as you stroll along the vast black beaches.
