Getting There - How to Reach Antigua?

Antigua has an international airport, VC Bird International Airport. You can book direct flights to Antigua with British Airways from London; the flight takes about nine hours. From Germany, Condor offers weekly direct flights from Frankfurt.

There is no shortage of hotels and guesthouses on Antigua to suit every taste and budget. While many package deals offer all-inclusive dining, guesthouses also have their advantages. In addition to moderate prices, staying at a guesthouse often allows for more contact with locals, providing an authentic insight into island life, and you can indulge in the Caribbean delicacies at your leisure.

Lively markets and colorful houses, an impressive harbor where large cruise ships dock, and old cathedrals and fortifications that offer glimpses into the past all await you in St. John's. Be sure to try the delicious exotic fruits and freshly caught seafood dishes at one of the markets, as these are simply typical of the Caribbean and taste better here than almost anywhere else. In addition to culinary highlights, you'll often find small, handcrafted artworks at the markets, making perfect souvenirs for your loved ones back home.

Tip: In the evenings, you should head to Fort James northwest of St. John's to enjoy the sunset over the bay. It's a sight you won't forget!

With such a large selection, it might be hard to choose just one beach, so you might as well rent a car and explore the island in search of your personal favorite!

There are beaches you absolutely must visit while in Antigua. Among them is the breathtaking Dickenson Bay in the northwest of the island, which comes very close to the image of a picture-perfect beach. If you prefer seclusion, head further south on Antigua, where you'll discover pristine natural beaches and coves that you might have almost all to yourself. On Rendezvous Bay and Darkwood Beach, you'll find white sand and palm trees swaying in the warm breeze-truly a dream setting. The Half Moon Bay in the east of the island is particularly recommended and is famous throughout the Caribbean due to its national park status.

If you're looking to treat yourself to something special on vacation, we recommend trying some delicious lobster or other seafood freshly caught off the coast. If you're not a fan of fish, you'll surely be won over by well-seasoned, stew-like meat dishes known as Pepper Pots, typical of Caribbean cuisine. A popular side is the national dish Cou-cou (also known as fungi), a type of polenta.

Tip: Experience Antigua's delicious cuisine in a unique way by cooking your own three-course meal during a 4-hour cooking class 'From The Sea'.

In the evenings, you can best end your vacation day with a delicious glass of rum made in Antigua.

If you're interested in the production of the sugarcane spirit, don't miss a visit to the distillery in St. John's. Here you can learn more about this typical Caribbean drink and sample the globally beloved brand right on site.

And if you're in the mood for a more unusual specialty, dare to try the highly praised banana ketchup, which has become an excellent condiment for meals.

Antigua is not just a paradise for beach lovers and foodies; it also offers plenty for adventure seekers. In addition to the previously mentioned dive spots off the coast of the island, you can also partake in one of the largest and most famous sailing regattas in the world, Antigua Sailing Week. Surfers are particularly attracted to Galley Bay in the northwest of the island. Other popular sports you can try on the island include golf, cricket, or fishing. If you prefer to swim with fish rather than catch them, we recommend an excursion to Stingray City, where you can swim with stingrays in an incredibly beautiful setting.
